I thought it was a joke. \u2018Hi, it\u2019s Donald Trump here,&#8217;\u201d Thompson revealed. \u201cI said, \u2018How can I help you?\u2019 I thought he needed directions. He said: \u2018I would love for you to stay in one of my beautiful places, and maybe we could have dinner,\u201d she revealed during a masterclass in Locarno, recalling working on Mike Nichols\u2019 political satire <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/1998\/film\/reviews\/primary-colors-1200453139\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cPrimary Colors\u201d<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI realized that on that very day my divorce has finally come through. I bet he has people looking all over for suitable people he could take out, for all these nice divorcees \u2014 I mean, he found the number of my trailer! That\u2019s stalking! So yes, I could have gone on a date with Donald Trump. I could have changed the course of American history!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThompson, who started out as a comedian, has never shied away from political humor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI did jokes about Margaret Thatcher and herpes, you know? It\u2019s the simplest thing you can get from unprotected sex. I said that Thatcher and herpes were both very difficult to get rid of. It still stands to this day,\u201d she said, reflecting on her beginnings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cLater, I wrote a series of comedy sketches and one of them was about a Victorian woman coming to see her mother. Her husband appears to have a \u2018small creature\u2019 attached to her body. She\u2019s talking about his penis, of course, and it\u2019s about sexual ignorance, but it\u2019s funny. The producer of \u2018Sense and Sensibility\u2019 saw that and thought: \u2018This woman can adapt Jane Austen!\u2019 That\u2019s so weird.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAt first, she didn\u2019t want to be an actor at all, she admitted. \u201cIt seemed like a precarious job. A hospital administrator came to our school once, and I thought it was a nice job,\u201d she said. \u201cMostly because she had nice shoes.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut acclaimed roles in \u201cHowards End\u201d and \u201cThe Remains of the Day\u201d followed. For the latter, she was inspired by her own grandmother and \u201cintergenerational trauma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cShe went into service when she was 13. She was raped by her employer, became pregnant, kept the child and discovered, as it happened to a lot of other young servant girls, that it was this forced surrogate motherhood.\u201d Her experience  informed her performance of Miss Kenton. \u201cMy grandmother was never really happy and fulfilled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLater, Hollywood took notice as well, with above-mentioned \u201cPrimary Colors\u201d mirroring the actual political turmoil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIf you remember the Monica Lewinsky scandal, poor Monica, that happened when we were making \u2018Primary Colors\u2019. We sat down, thinking: \u2018What are we going to do?\u2019 We are making a film about something that\u2019s happening at the same time.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShe added: \u201cIt seems like such a long time ago. Oh, if only we could have a nice sex scandal and none of this, please.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhile the \u201cHarry Potter\u201d franchise wasn\u2019t exactly an artistic challenge \u2014 \u201cI don\u2019t mean to be rude, but I came in, did the bit with glasses and hair, and left\u201d \u2014 \u201cNanny McPhee,\u201d which she also wrote, was more satisfying.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI didn\u2019t write it for children \u2014 I wrote it for everybody. It\u2019s about grief and I lost my father when I was very young,\u201d she said. \u201cI think she was the one I turned to for comfort. She\u2019s so important to me and connects me to all generations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tCelebrated also for \u201cLove Actually,\u201d Thompson never expected it to become a beloved classic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI remember Hugh Grant coming up to me, asking: \u2018Is that the most psychotic thing we have ever made?\u2019 Then people started approaching me on the public transport, weeping,\u201d she admitted. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI think I\u2019ve touched a nerve because we, women, when we are experiencing heartbreak, sometimes we have to hide it. What moves you is not her crying, it\u2019s her covering it up, going downstairs and being cheerful. It\u2019s constant source of astonishment to me [the film became so iconic]. It\u2019s a little bit weird!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThompson, who picked up the Leopard Club Award at the fest, recently starred in Brian Kirk\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/festivals\/emma-thompson-dead-of-winter-filming-action-scenes-1236482256\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cDead of Winter\u201d.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI nearly had an aneurism \u2013 I was so astonished and so happy,\u201d she said, recalling an especially crowded screening of the film. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cMost of the women I know are incredibly heroic. And the fact that [this character] was old and grieving, I haven\u2019t seen it before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShe\u2019s also never seen a character like the one she played in \u201cGood Luck to You, Leo Grande\u201d: a woman who decides to finally experience an orgasm late in life with the help of a sex worker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI loved her fear, I loved that she knew she was missing something important. She did all the right things [in life] and by the time we meet her, she\u2019s just depressed and confused,\u201d she noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe conversations I\u2019ve had around this movie were incredible, with younger women telling me they\u2019ve never experienced it either or older gay men saying it helped them with their body image. But it was very important for her to experience this orgasm on her own.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShe also talked about the scene of her standing in front of the \u201cnot well lit\u201d mirror, naked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt was just\u2026there. Everything,\u201d she said. \u201cI went to lots of art galleries and looked at images of Adam and Eve. They all stood in a very relaxed position, with one knee bent, not thinking about that. I tried to channel it. It was about someone having this neutral acceptance.
