Credit: Neuroscience News<\/p>\n<p>Over the quarter-century of research, the scientists have seen some notable lifestyle and personality differences between SuperAgers and those aging typically \u2014 such as being social and gregarious \u2014 but \u201cit\u2019s really what we\u2019ve found in their brains that\u2019s been so earth-shattering for us,\u201d said\u00a0Dr. Sandra Weintraub, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and neurology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>By identifying biological and behavioral traits associated with SuperAging, the scientists hope to uncover new strategies to promote cognitive resilience and delay or prevent Alzheimer\u2019s and other diseases that cause cognitive decline and dementia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur findings show that exceptional memory in old age is not only possible but is linked to a distinct neurobiological profile. This opens the door to new interventions aimed at preserving brain health well into the later decades of life,\u201d said Weintraub, corresponding author of a new paper summarizing the findings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The paper will be published in a perspective piece in Alzheimer\u2019s &amp; Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer\u2019s Association as part of the journal\u2019s special issue commemorating the\u00a040th anniversary of the National Institute on Aging\u2019s Alzheimer\u2019s Disease Centers Program and the 25th anniversary of the National Alzheimer Coordinating Center.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SuperAger brains are resilient, resistant\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The term \u201cSuperAger\u201d was\u00a0coined by\u00a0Dr. M. Marsel Mesulam, who founded the\u00a0Mesulam Center for Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer\u2019s Disease\u00a0at Northwestern in the late 1990s.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2000,\u00a0a cohort of 290 SuperAger participants has passed through the Mesulam Center\u2019s doors, and the scientists have autopsied 77 donated SuperAger brains. Some of the brains contained amyloid and tau proteins (also known as plaques and tangles), which are known to play key roles in the progression of Alzheimer\u2019s disease, but\u00a0others didn\u2019t develop any.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we realized is there are two mechanisms that lead someone to become a SuperAger,\u201d Weintraub said. \u201cOne is resistance: they don\u2019t make the plaques and tangles. Two is resilience: they make them, but they don\u2019t do anything to their brains.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other\u00a0<\/strong><strong>key findings:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Exceptional memory performance:<\/strong>\u00a0SuperAgers score at least 9 out of 15 on a delayed word recall test \u2014 on par with individuals in their 50s and 60s.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Youthful brain structure:<\/strong>\u00a0Unlike typically aging brains, SuperAgers show no significant thinning of their cortex \u2014 the outer layer of the brain \u2014 and even have a thicker anterior cingulate cortex than younger adults.
