There\u2019s another murder brewing for \u201cOnly Murders in the Building<\/a>,\u201d which will return September 9 with Season 5 on Hulu<\/a>. The mystery will surround (spoiler<\/strong> for those not through Season 4<\/a>) the Arconia\u2019s beloved doorman, Lester, who was found dead in the courtyard fountain in the waning moments of last October\u2019s season finale<\/a>.<\/p>\n

When we last left the terrific trio \u2014\u00a0which includes Steve Martin as Charles-Haden Savage, Selena Gomez as Mabel Mora, and the once again Emmy-nominated Martin Short<\/a> as Oliver Putnam \u2014\u00a0Oliver had just married the love of his life (in the previously mentioned courtyard), the actress Loretta (Meryl Streep). As for what\u2019s to come now or how Short might be approaching Oliver in the fifth go around, the \u201cThree Amigos\u201d star insisted in an interview<\/a> with Deadline that he doesn\u2019t \u201canalyze [himself] that way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t sit back and say, \u2018You know what I\u2019ve done with Oliver this season\u2026?\u2019 I look at the script and I think, \u2018How do I make this real and funny?\u2019 That\u2019s what I think,\u201d Short said. \u201cAnd know that I\u2019m in such good hands. That\u2019s the other huge liberating thing about doing a show like this. Especially into a Season 5, you feel like you\u2019re in such safe hands that no one\u2019s going to make you look like an idiot. No one\u2019s going to make the wrong choice. And so, it loosens you up. It makes you feel very free. But I don\u2019t really go in with endlessly preconceived notions of what might come across. I certainly prepare thoughts, but you want to be open to the moment and what the other actor is giving you, and maybe that\u2019s going to change your mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

Producer and head writer John Hoffman<\/a> also spoke with Deadline, declaring that the fifth season<\/a> \u2014\u00a0which will add Ren\u00e9e Zellweger, Christoph Waltz, and Keegan Michael Key to the cast \u2014\u00a0will be a \u201cNew York story\u201d concerning something that\u2019s \u201chappening across the country,\u201d though specifically to \u201cthe city itself.\u201d From his explanation, Hoffman seemed to indicate that this go around might draw more from the tumultuous state of affairs that is the United States.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re pulling from the headlines to ask very specific questions about the balance of power in New York and who has that power,\u201d Hoffman said. \u201cThat\u2019s what we\u2019re really looking at \u2014 the shifting power dynamics of the country. And what\u2019s really fun about it, the comedic side of it, is that the history of power in New York is pretty colorful, with the old mob and the new mob mixing in. What do those two look like, and how do they sit on either side, with our trio in the center of it?\u201d<\/p>\n

In May, Short spoke with IndieWire<\/a> about leading the series both as one of its executive producers and its stars. While he said that \u201cyou can\u2019t control the outcome\u201d of the material, the experience itself can be controlled.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I do think the behavior of the leads sets a tone, but most people\u2019s reputations are pretty good,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve done this a long time, and I\u2019ve never worked with a monster. It just doesn\u2019t happen. I mean, I have made movies where you kind of go, \u2018Oh, this director, I don\u2019t know,\u2019 but I\u2019ll still weasel as many takes [as I can], and I\u2019ll go home and pour a glass of champagne and toast myself saying, \u2018I did everything I could do.
