The MVP of the Ovi Cup gala match was an Ovechkin, just not the one we\u2019re used to seeing all over the scoresheet.<\/p>\n
Instead, Alex Ovechkin\u2019s<\/strong> six-year-old son, Sergei Ovechkin<\/strong>, dominated the friendly game on the final day of the youth tournament. The assist from Kaprizov is a bit of a full-circle moment as Kaprizov played the role of babysitter for Ovi Jr. during the 2023 All-Star weekend<\/a>.<\/p>\n The elder Ovechkin\u2019s trademark tooth-gapped smile was as wide as ever from the bench as he watched his son score goal after goal. Next year will be much better.\u201d<\/p>\n Sergei, a 2036 NHL Draft-eligible hockey player, has been on skates for a few years after\u00a0getting on the ice for the first time in December 2020<\/a>. Saturday\u2019s game was the third in a row that he has skated in at the Ovi Cup.<\/p>\n In addition to the Ovechkins, other Russian NHL stars participated in the match. Matvei Michkov recorded two goals for Team Ovechkin while Kaprizov added one of his own. Evgeni Malkin notched a hat-trick of his own for Team Datsyuk.<\/p>\n \u201cEverything was great, the match was friendly, buddies on and off the ice,\u201d Datsyuk told Match TV\u2019s Stepan Karpushin postgame<\/a>. \u201cWe needed to defend another Ovi, but it didn\u2019t work out.\u201d<\/p>\n Other notable participants in the game included Vyacheslav Fetisov, Valeri Kamensky, Roman Rotenberg, Evgeni Plushenko, Alexei Morozov, Dmitry Sychev, Sergei Konkov, Alexander Guskov, Dmitry Orlov, Andrei Nikolishin, Mikhail Sergachev, Kamil Gadzhiev, Kirill Marchenko, Egor Zamula, and Dmitry Simashev.<\/p>\n The Ovi Cup is an annual youth hockey tournament named after the Washington Capitals captain and features 24 youth teams from Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan.<\/p>\n The CSKA youth team was this year\u2019s champions, defeating the Ak Bars youth team in the final. Ovechkin personally presented them with their trophy.<\/p>\n Saturday\u2019s game was Ovechkin\u2019s second this summer, following his appearance and goal in the \u201cMatch of the Year\u201d on July 13 at CSKA Arena<\/a>.<\/p>\n In past years, the Ovi Cup has been Ovechkin\u2019s last official on-ice action in Russia before he returns to DC for Capitals training camp.<\/p>\n \t\n
