{"id":132619,"date":"2025-08-09T20:42:08","date_gmt":"2025-08-09T20:42:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/132619\/"},"modified":"2025-08-09T20:42:08","modified_gmt":"2025-08-09T20:42:08","slug":"four-la-jolla-groups-create-new-wish-list-of-projects-for-san-diego-to-fund-san-diego-union-tribune","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/132619\/","title":{"rendered":"Four La Jolla groups create new wish list of projects for San Diego to fund \u2013 San Diego Union-Tribune"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Seven La Jolla projects are soon to be submitted to the city of San Diego for consideration for funding, part of an annual tradition of local planning groups producing a list of capital improvement proposals they would like the city to implement.<\/p>\n<p>The list was created with input from the La Jolla Community Planning Association, La Jolla Shores Association, Bird Rock Community Council and La Jolla Parks &amp; Beaches.<\/p>\n<p>The Community Planning Association board voted unanimously to give the list its formal support during its Aug. 7 meeting.<\/p>\n<p>In coming weeks, the other participating groups also will vote on it, and it likely will be submitted to the city at the beginning of September.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than create a prioritized list, the groups produced their top seven projects to submit.<\/p>\n<p>They are:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Resurface the La Jolla Shores boardwalk, also known as Walter Munk Way<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Repave all of Neptune Place and repair infrastructure and flood control systems<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Install three roundabouts on La Jolla Shores Drive<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Repair a belvedere, or gazebo, in Scripps Park that has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/2023\/10\/20\/belvedere-in-la-jollas-scripps-park-is-closed-until-further-notice-due-to-excessive-cliff-erosion\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">closed to the public<\/a> since October 2023 because of erosion concerns<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Replace broken steps and a seawall at South Casa Beach<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Install adaptive streetlights throughout La Jolla. Such lights can adjust their brightness based on movements by pedestrians or traffic or even on weather conditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Establish pedestrian safety measures such as:<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Install sidewalks on the west side of La Jolla Shores Drive<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Upgrade pedestrian signals throughout La Jolla<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Install a crosswalk at El Paseo Grande and Camino del Oro in La Jolla Shores<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Install stop signs at all corners from La Jolla Shores Drive west to the ocean<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Install a pedestrian-activated crossing at La Jolla Shores Drive and Vallecitos<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Add and upgrade pedestrian-activated crossings along La Jolla Boulevard in Bird Rock<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"This belvedere, or gazebo, in Scripps Park, pictured in 2023, has been closed due to erosion concerns. (File)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe city, particularly council District 1, might have a little pocket of money left over from something else and they will [refer] to this list, and if there is something that\u2019s a match, even if it is not a top priority, they will fund it,\u201d said community volunteer Janie Emerson, a former president of the La Jolla Shores Association.<\/p>\n<p>In the past, La Jolla\u2019s community groups would submit separate lists and the city would pick one or two projects based on priorities and funding availability.<\/p>\n<p>But looking to present a united front, representatives of the Community Planning Association, Shores Association, Bird Rock Community Council and Parks &amp; Beaches got together the past few years to produce one list of desired projects.<\/p>\n<p>No. 1 on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/2023\/07\/22\/la-jolla-groups-come-together-to-draft-project-wish-list-scripps-park-sidewalk-again-takes-top-spot\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first two lists<\/a>, in 2022 and \u201923, was widening and rebuilding the Scripps Park sidewalk along Coast Boulevard. Resurfacing the La Jolla Shores boardwalk was No. 2 both years.<\/p>\n<p>In March 2024, the city <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/2024\/03\/14\/san-diego-provides-750000-for-scripps-park-sidewalk-expansion\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">allocated $750,000<\/a> to draft a plan to widen the sidewalk as one of 19 park projects citywide that will receive a total of $15.9 million in capital improvement funding as part of Mayor Todd Gloria\u2019s \u201cParks for All of Us\u201d initiative.<\/p>\n<p>A city representative said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/2025\/07\/09\/la-jolla-permit-reviewers-ok-sidewalk-expansion-next-to-scripps-park\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">last month<\/a> that construction on the sidewalk project is expected to begin late this year or early 2026 and take four to six weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the groups created an unprioritized top-five list and submitted it for the current 2025-26 fiscal year, based on funding availability.<\/p>\n<p>This year, Emerson said, group leaders put together the new list \u201cin under an hour,\u201d faster than in the past.<\/p>\n<p>LJCPA President Lisa Kriedeman said \u201ceveryone was on the same page, which is great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In generating ideas to bring to the table, groups including La Jolla Parks &amp; Beaches collected ideas at meetings from the rest of the board.
