ABC affiliate KSAT announced that Steve Spriester, a more than 30-year vet of the station, will step away from the desk after a final broadcast on August 27.

According to KSAT’s announcement, Spriester will be joining Perfected Claims, a legal advocacy firm that specializes in tort cases. The journalist first joined the news team in 1995 as a general assignments reporter.

Since then, he has grown with the station. He quickly became a weekend anchor in 1996, a 6 pm weekday anchor and investigative reporter in 1998, and has helmed 5 pm, 6 pm, and Nightbeat coverage since 2000. Over the decades, he has earned several awards, including three Lone Star Emmys, two Telly Awards, and recognition from the Texas Associated Press as Best Newscast.

“Steve has been a cornerstone of San Antonio’s media landscape for over three decades,” said Ashley Parker, vice president and general manager of KSAT12, in the announcement. “But beyond the headlines, he’s built deep relationships, listened to his community, and shared stories that have resonated with viewers. While we’ll miss seeing him on the air, we are thrilled for Steve’s next chapter.”

When not reading the news, Spreister was a ubiquitous presence at the station through segments like the Spriester Sessions, a series of interviews with San Antonio’s cultural leaders. He also anchored NBA championships locally as well as the annual Fiesta parades.

“It hasn’t been an easy decision to step away after all these years at KSAT12. The station has been my home, and I’m grateful for the support I’ve received,” he said in the announcement. “But it’s time for the next chapter. I am deeply thankful to the viewers and the community who have welcomed me into their homes, engaged with me on a personal level, and made San Antonio a better place.”

2025 has been a particularly transformative year for San Antonio’s media landscape. In April, Deborah Knapp retired from KENS 5 after a 50-year career and Andrew Kabb signed off from KABB after 20 years.
