Riboflavin can also help your body break down fats and medications, Cording says. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"17\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">\u201cRiboflavin is often used to treat migraine headaches in patients who want to avoid prescription medication trials,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.providence.org\/doctors\/profile\/203880-clifford-segil\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.providence.org\/doctors\/profile\/203880-clifford-segil\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Clifford Segil,\" data-node-id=\"17.1\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Clifford Segil, D.O.,<\/a> a neurologist at Providence Saint John\u2019s Health Center in Santa Monica, CA. It can also <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10716896\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10716896\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"decrease blood pressure\" data-node-id=\"17.3\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">decrease blood pressure<\/a> in people with a certain genetic variation, potentially lowering the risk of stroke. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">\u201cMore recently, we and others have noticed that low riboflavin was associated with some changes in both the nervous system and blood pressure,\u201d Dr. Rosenberg says. \u201cThere is an association between low riboflavin and hypertension.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"19.0\">B3 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"20\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Niacin, or vitamin B3, also works to support the function of your brain, nerves, and skin. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"21\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">High doses of niacin may lower levels of LDL \u201cbad\u201d cholesterol and raise HDL \u201cgood\u201d cholesterol levels, per the <a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/Niacin-HealthProfessional\/#h14\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/Niacin-HealthProfessional\/#h14\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"NIH\" data-node-id=\"21.1\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NIH<\/a>. But taking these high doses can cause flushing, burning, tingling, and itching sensations, making it uncomfortable for people to use to lower cholesterol.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"22\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">There may be a role for niacin in skin cancer, though. \u201cNiacin seems to protect against the way the skin can respond to the damaging effects of the sun,\u201d Dr. Rosenberg says. \u201cIt may be helpful in preventing some skin cancers related to sun exposure.\u201d However, he says, that\u2019s still being explored. <\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"23.0\">B5 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"24\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Also known as pantothenic acid, this vitamin works to help the body break down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, Cording says. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"25\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Research has looked into the possibility of vitamin B5 reducing levels of lipids (fat in the blood) in people who have high cholesterol and similar conditions, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/PantothenicAcid-HealthProfessional\/#h9\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/PantothenicAcid-HealthProfessional\/#h9\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"NIH\" data-node-id=\"25.1\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NIH<\/a> says it may help. Some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/cardiovascular-medicine\/articles\/10.3389\/fcvm.2022.906232\/full\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/cardiovascular-medicine\/articles\/10.3389\/fcvm.2022.906232\/full\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"studies\" data-node-id=\"25.3\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">studies<\/a> have shown that vitamin B5 may help lower the risk of cardiovascular disease in some doses.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"26.0\">B6<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"27\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Vitamin B6 supports metabolism and the immune system, according to Cording. It may also help boost brain health. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"28\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Vitamin B6 may <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10526783\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10526783\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"play a role\" data-node-id=\"28.1\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">play a role<\/a> in reducing bodily inflammation, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11592557\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11592557\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"linked\" data-node-id=\"28.3\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">linked<\/a> to a host of serious diseases, including cardiovascular disease, dementia, and arthritis. But research into this is ongoing, per the <a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/VitaminB6-HealthProfessional\/#h12\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/VitaminB6-HealthProfessional\/#h12\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"NIH\" data-node-id=\"28.5\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NIH<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"29\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Lack of B6 is linked with elevated levels of an amino acid called homocysteine in the blood, Dr. Rosenberg points out. \u201cElevated homocysteine is associated with an increased risk of cerebrovascular disease, and especially dementia,\u201d he says. \u201cVitamin B6 plus folic acid and B12 are the three vitamins that are necessary to treat and lower blood homocysteine when it&#8217;s elevated. This is a promising and underutilized approach to [slowing] age-related cognitive decline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"30.0\">B7 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"31\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Biotin helps the body break down nutrients and can support metabolism, Cording says. The vitamin is usually linked to support for healthy skin, hair, and nails, especially in supplements. But the <a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/Biotin-HealthProfessional\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/Biotin-HealthProfessional\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"NIH\" data-node-id=\"31.1\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NIH<\/a> points out that more research is needed. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"32\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Dr. Rosenberg agrees. \u201cBiotin deficiency may be related to some skin conditions and there\u2019s even been some suggestion that it may help with some skin conditions\u2014but that association is weak,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"33.0\">B12<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"34\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prevention.com\/health\/a65255831\/vitamin-b12-deficiency-symptoms\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.prevention.com\/health\/a65255831\/vitamin-b12-deficiency-symptoms\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Vitamin B12\" data-node-id=\"34.0\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Vitamin B12<\/a>, a.k.a. cobalamin, helps support energy production, Cording says. It also helps support blood and nerve cells. \u201cIt&#8217;s really involved in so many aspects of our well-being,\u201d Cording says. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"35\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Vitamin B12 is being researched as a potential way to lower the risk of cognitive decline in older adults. (The <a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/VitaminB12-HealthProfessional\/#h17\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/VitaminB12-HealthProfessional\/#h17\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"NIH\" data-node-id=\"35.1\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NIH<\/a> says that more research is needed.) However, having low levels of vitamin B12 may lead to neurological changes. \u201cVitamin B12  is part of the routine reversible memory loss lab work every patient being evaluated for dementia should obtain when they see a neurologist or their primary care physician,\u201d Dr. Segil says.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"36.0\">Folic acid<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"37\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Vitamin B9 helps to support the formation of red blood cells and DNA, as well as cell growth. Folic acid also plays a role in brain development during pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"38\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Supplementing with folic acid may lower the risk of stroke, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/Folate-HealthProfessional\/#h14\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/Folate-HealthProfessional\/#h14\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"NIH\" data-node-id=\"38.1\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NIH<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"39.0\">Should I take a B vitamin?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"40\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">It\u2019s important to point out that you can get B vitamins through food. (They\u2019ll likely want to give you a blood test to see whether you\u2019re deficient in anything and by how much.) \u201cThere are certain times where individually supplementing with one or a few of the B vitamins might be indicated,\u201d Cording says. \u201cBut check with your healthcare provider.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"43\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Dietary supplements are products intended to supplement the diet.
