They can vote against, and effectively veto, any proposal put forward by the council.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The ten non-permanent members are currently Algeria, Denmark, Greece, Guyana, Pakistan, Panama, the Republic of Korea, Sierra Leone, Slovenia and Somalia.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"mailto:?subject=Tens of thousands protest in Israel over plan to escalate war on Gaza \u2013 latest updates&amp;body=https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/live\/2025\/aug\/10\/israel-gaza-war-protests-aid-latest-news-updates?CMP=share_btn_url&amp;page=with%3Ablock-689857478f08f4cafb5acba7#block-689857478f08f4cafb5acba7\" type=\"button\" class=\"dcr-1mulgdf\">Share<\/a>UN security council to meet over Israel\u2019s Gaza City takeover plan<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>The UN security council<\/strong> will shortly hold an emergency session to discuss Israel\u2019s plan to capture and occupy <strong>Gaza City<\/strong>, which if carried out would give <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/israel\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Israel<\/a> control of about 85% of the strip (the Israeli military currently controls about 75% of the territory).<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The meeting, requested by Denmark, France, Greece, the UK and Slovenia, is scheduled to start at 10am (14:00 GMT) in New York and will see UN rapporteurs outline the likely disastrous consequences of seizing Gaza\u2019s main city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was among foreign leaders urging Israel to reconsider its decision to advance into Gaza City.<\/p>\n<p>Buildings destroyed in Israeli airstrikes surround makeshift shelters for displaced Palestinian people in Gaza City. Photograph: Bashar Taleb\/AFP\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Regional power Saudi Arabia, which has said it could not normalise ties with Israel without the establishment of a Palestinian state, condemned any move to occupy Gaza.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Germany, Israel\u2019s second-biggest arms supplier and strongest backer in Europe, on Friday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/aug\/08\/germany-halts-military-exports-to-israel-gaza-friedrich-merz\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">suspended the delivery of weaponry<\/a> that could be used in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Foreign ministers from the UK, Germany, Italy, New Zealand and Australia released a joint statement rejecting the plan on the same day, saying it would \u201caggravate\u201d the already \u201ccatastrophic\u201d situation in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAny attempts at annexation or of settlement extension violate international law,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"mailto:?subject=Tens of thousands protest in Israel over plan to escalate war on Gaza \u2013 latest updates&amp;body=https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/live\/2025\/aug\/10\/israel-gaza-war-protests-aid-latest-news-updates?CMP=share_btn_url&amp;page=with%3Ablock-6898515b8f08bfc62530d5e3#block-6898515b8f08bfc62530d5e3\" type=\"button\" class=\"dcr-1mulgdf\">Share<\/a>Tens of thousands protest in Israel over plan to escalate war on Gaza<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Welcome to our live coverage of Israel\u2019s war on Gaza.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets of Tel Aviv on Saturday night to oppose Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s plan to escalate his war on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/gaza\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gaza<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The plan lists five so-called \u201cprinciples\u201d for ending the war: disarming Hamas, returning all hostages, demilitarising the Gaza Strip, taking security control of Gaza, and setting up \u201can alternative civil administration that is neither Hamas nor the Palestinian Authority\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The demonstration against the plan, estimated to have attracted more than 100,000 protesters by organisers, saw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/aug\/09\/thousands-in-tel-aviv-protest-against-netanyahus-plan-to-escalate-gaza-war\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">calls for an immediate end to the military assault<\/a> and for the release of hostages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Authorities did not provide an official estimate for the size of the crowd, though it dwarfed other recent anti-war rallies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Public opinion polls show an overwhelming majority of Israelis favour an immediate end to the war to secure the release of the remaining 50 hostages held by militants in Gaza. The full cabinet is expected to give its approval as soon as Sunday.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>The Palestinian Authority on Saturday lambasted the Israeli government\u2019s decision to expand its assault<\/strong> in Gaza, as it called on the international community to push for the entry of aid into the strip. According to the official Palestinian news agency Wafa, the PA\u2019s presidential spokesperson Nabil Abu Rudeineh said the Israeli government\u2019s moves were \u201can unprecedented challenge and provocation to the international will to achieve peace and stability\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>Several Arab and Muslim countries on Saturday condemned as a \u201cdangerous escalation\u201d Israel\u2019s plan to take control of Gaza City.<\/strong> About 20 countries, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, said the plan constituted \u201ca flagrant violation of international law, and an attempt to entrench the illegal occupation and impose a fait accompli&#8230; in contravention of international legitimacy\u201d. <strong>Muslim nations must work in total unison and work to mobilise the international community against Israel\u2019s plan<\/strong> to take control of Gaza City, Turkish foreign minister Hakan Fidan said on Saturday after talks in Egypt. Speaking at a joint press conference in El Alamein with his Egyptian counterpart after meeting Egypt\u2019s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Fidan also said the Organisation of Islamic cooperation had been called to an emergency meeting.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>More than 450 people were arrested in central London on Saturday at the largest demonstration relating to Palestine Action since the group was proscribed as a terrorist organisation<\/strong>. On Saturday night, police said that as of 9pm, 466 people had been arrested for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/aug\/09\/palestine-action-arrests-london-largest-protest-ban\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">showing support for Palestine Action<\/a>. There were a further eight arrests for other offences including five assaults on officers. Police said the total of 474 was the most arrests it had made related to a single operation in at least the past decade.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>The UK announced another \u00a38.5m for UN aid to Gaza after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/israel\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Israel<\/a> unveiled plans to expand its military operations<\/strong> in the territory.
