Raised on a sheep ranch in Potter Valley, she and her sister, Norma, shared a love of horses. At age 14, her family moved to Mendocino, where Patsy, her sister, and her mother were hired as extras in the Academy Award winning movie Johnny Belinda. This was an experience she fondly remembered throughout her life.<\/p>\n<p>Patsy attended San Jose State University where she was voted Homecoming Queen. Meeting Jim Downs at a dance, she mentioned to her sister, \u201cthis man would make someone a good husband\u201d. They married in 1954 and began a partnership, at times competitive, but filled with mutual admiration, love, and shared adventures.<\/p>\n<p>In 1955, Patsy and Jim moved to West Germany where Jim was employed by the US Army as an investigator. The birth of their first son, Michael, came soon after. Their experience on the continent sparked a lifelong passion for travel.<\/p>\n<p>Patsy and Jim returned to the United States and settled in Jim\u2019s hometown of Oceanside where they raised their two boys and lived the remainder of their lives. As a lifelong educator Patsy inspired students at South Oceanside and Mission Elementary Schools. She earned her Master of Education degree from San Diego State University. Patsy remained an eternal student\u2013intent on improving her Spanish even into her 90s.<\/p>\n<p>As an avid snow skier, she was the catalyst behind countless family ski trips. In addition, Patsy was a passionate tennis player where the couple were fixtures at El Camino Country Club.<\/p>\n<p>Following retirement, she energetically volunteered at \u2018SPOT\u2019 and the Assistance League \u2013 North Coast. Patsy led her local book club with enthusiasm, fostering a love of reading and meaningful discussion among friends. Her dedication to literature, service, and lifelong learning left a lasting imprint on all who knew her.<\/p>\n<p>Above all Patsy\u2019s priority was the family. Preceded in death by beloved husband, Jim. She is survived by her sons, Michael Downs (Adele Genzlinger) and David Downs (Kimberley). She was a proud grandmother to Elyse Goldapp, Sally Creamer, Delaney Downs, Bramwell Downs, and great-granddaughter, Penelope. Patricia\u2019s warmth, generosity, and love has left a lasting imprint on everyone that knew her.<\/p>\n<p>A memorial service to celebrate Patsy\u2019s life will be held on September 20, 2025. The family will share service details with friends and loved ones as the date approaches.
