Tips for fishing with kids in Chicago

The Chicago Park District, which stocks and runs fishing programs across the city, maintains a must-read tip sheet with excellent advice for fishing with children ages 8-12. The best bit of wisdom? End the outing as soon as kids get tired or bored. “You can always come back, but you can never recover from boredom,” the district sagely advises. The state of Illinois also has great suggestions, complete with illustrated fishing basics.

Here are some of the district’s recommendations, “gleaned from fishing with over 70,000 kids over twelve years”:

Make it fun: Plan for only 45-60 minutes on a first outing. Use a simple rod, small hooks and small live bait like earthworms to lure abundant species such as sunfish, gobies, bullheads and rock bass. Fishing off a dock, where catchable fish like to hang out, is a good place to start so young anglers can tie and bait a hook, and cast or drop a line with a bobber. The best outing is where the child’s bait is getting hit immediately, and they catch a fish quickly to create that “magical moment,” according to the Chicago Park District tip sheet.

Safety first: Many spots along the lakefront and harbors do not have guard rails, so small children should wear personal flotation devices. Parents might also consider flattening the barb on the hook with a pair of pliers to avoid a painful situation should someone get hooked by an errant cast. In wooded and brushy locations, take precautions against ticks, mosquitoes and poison ivy. While many families won’t be prepared to clean and cook their catch, be aware of state advisories on how much of certain fish to eat from various locations due to concentrations of toxins; avoid carp and catfish altogether.

Mind the rules: Children under 16 don’t need a fishing license, but any adults fishing with them will. Licenses are available at bait shops and online. Fishing rules, such as quantity and size limits, can be found here; check the water body’s webpage for site-specific rules.

Helpful online guides
Find maps, parking, rules, fish species and more useful information for Chicago, the counties and the state.

The Chicago Park District, which stocks and runs fishing programs across the city, maintains a must-read tip sheet…

[5124
960,5386,1818
0":"post-134162","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-chicago","8":"tag-chicago","9":"tag-il","10":"tag-illinois
["GET
