{"id":134841,"date":"2025-08-10T17:10:12","date_gmt":"2025-08-10T17:10:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/134841\/"},"modified":"2025-08-10T17:10:12","modified_gmt":"2025-08-10T17:10:12","slug":"shucked-cast-director-are-serious-with-corny-comedy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/134841\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Shucked\u2019 cast, director are serious with corny comedy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t\tOverview: Shucked<\/p>\n<p>Ellis\u00a0brings his own authenticity to the role, enhancing\u00a0a character with no textual queerness.\u00a0He is excited to show that to his aunt, uncle and cousin who live in San Diego.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Once he steps out on stage to narrate the beginning of hilarious country musical \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegotheatres.org\/event\/2025\/08\/shucked\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shucked<\/a>,\u201d Tyler Joseph Ellis wants to reassure the audience as fast as possible that they will get their money\u2019s worth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His anxious but funny demeanor as the second narrator is meant to be endearing as he sets the stage for what is to come: A goofy fable set in Cobb County about a corn blight that delays a wedding, prompting the bride to venture to the big city to get help from a \u201ccorn\u201d doctor (a podiatrist with a mistaken identity).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timesofsandiego.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Tyler-Joseph-Ellis-as-Storyteller-2-scaled.jpg?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"520\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Tyler-Joseph-Ellis-as-Storyteller-2.jpg\" alt=\"Shucked\" class=\"wp-image-337419\"  \/><\/a>Maya Lagerstam, left, and Tyler Joseph Ellis performing as storytellers one and two in \u201cShucked.\u201d (Photo by Matthew Murphy and Evan Zimmerman\/courtesy Broadway San Diego)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe sooner that I can do my best to assure you that you made the right choice coming here tonight, the better,\u201d\u00a0Ellis said in a phone call ahead of the tour of \u201cShucked\u201d\u00a0arriving at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.broadwaysd.com\/theatres\/san-diego-civic-theatre\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Civic Theatre<\/a>\u00a0for a week-long engagement\u00a0through Broadway San Diego starting Aug. 12. \u201cI do take that very seriously.\u00a0Theater\u00a0is not cheap and I want to make sure it\u2019s a worthwhile experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ellis said, \u201cUnabashed joy is worth its weight in gold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A serious endeavor<\/p>\n<p>Taking a corny comedy seriously comes straight from the director.\u00a0Jack O\u2019Brien, Tony winner and former artistic director at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theoldglobe.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Old Globe<\/a>,\u00a0despite being a Broadway legend, \u201ctakes himself the least seriously but takes the work the most seriously,\u201d explained Ellis.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe directed \u2018Shucked,\u2019 as though we were Shakespeare,\u201d\u00a0Ellis,\u00a0a University of Southern California alum,\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<p>When\u00a0the Bay Area-raised actor\u00a0auditioned,\u00a0his goal was to make O\u2019Brien laugh. That mattered more than landing the part. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cUltimately making him laugh was heaven on earth. I couldn\u2019t believe it,\u201d\u00a0Ellis said while wearing his favorite cap, merchandise from O\u2019Brien\u2019s 2018 revival of \u201cCarousel.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Brien\u2019s work is in his blood, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Setting the tone early is something Ellis learned from Grey Henson, who played the role\u00a0of Storyteller #2\u00a0when it debuted in New York City in\u00a02023. <\/p>\n<p>Henson,\u00a0who originated the role of\u00a0Damian Hubbard\u00a0in Broadway\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.broadway.com\/shows\/mean-girls\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mean Girls<\/a>\u201d adaptation,\u00a0brought a queer sensibility to the role that won Ellis over immediately,\u00a0even before the corn kick line could.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I saw him do it, I went, \u2018I have to play that part.\u2019 I didn\u2019t necessarily think like I have to play that part the exact same way\u00a0Grey did,\u00a0but I saw it done so successfully that it made me want to take a crack at it,\u201d\u00a0Ellis said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ellis\u00a0brings his own authenticity to the role, enhancing\u00a0a character with no textual queerness.\u00a0He is excited to show that to his aunt, uncle and cousin who live in San Diego.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The quest for\u00a0the absolute best show every night\u00a0is not without reason. <\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Brien believes that getting people with opposing views and all walks of life in a room and laughing together is magic.\u00a0The tour has stops from Texas to Ohio.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe truth is, I\u2019m as despairing and upset as anyone in the country at how far apart we have begun to move,\u201d\u00a0O\u2019Brien told the San Diego Union-Tribune. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re looking at each other over a vast abyss and no one is moving. But if I can put 1,100 people together in a space and they all laugh, I\u2019ve done something, I think, to move the needle forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>New, yet nostalgic<\/p>\n<p>Despite rave reviews as one of the funniest musicals of all time, the cast of \u201cShucked\u201d have an uphill battle in reaching the audience, based on some metrics.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Many of the Broadway shows successfully\u00a0making their production investments back\u00a0are revivals and classics.\u00a0New musicals and plays are\u00a0nearly always\u00a0based on\u00a0familiar source material, like the \u201cBack to the Future\u201d franchise or \u201cOutsiders\u201d book.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Amid a sea of adaptations, there are few success stories of wholly original works. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cShucked\u201d is one of the more recent. \u201cThere\u2019s that excitement, but there\u2019s also a big level of responsibility,\u201d\u00a0Ellis said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Newness aside, it still hits the\u00a0emotional comfort many crave when seeking out\u00a0classic musicals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis show makes me feel super nostalgic,\u201d Ellis said. He saw the show six times when it was on Broadway. \u201cIt feels like a golden age musical in terms of storytelling.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The conman in a small town hearkens back to \u201cMusic Man.\u201d Book writer Robert Horn drew inspiration from variety TV show \u201cHee Haw.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nashville songwriters\u00a0Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally wrote music and lyrics in songs like \u201cIndependently Owned\u201d that are already being used as audition materials in New York City.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since it doesn\u2019t rely on animatronics and flashy sets, Ellis expects the show to be picked up by local and regional theaters.
