Here\u2019s why"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"I2IVNE2WSNC4FIRO6NQC6BLC5Y\">The pigs in California have residents seeing blue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5MAQIFCVONHOLGOSL642DITQEI\">Warnings have been issued by authorities in the state after trappers have reported discovering wild pigs with \u201cbright blue\u201d meat. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"P52YCXD4ZVGWZA4G5VGW3ZAMNY\">Reports have been coming in to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife regarding the peculiar sighting back in March. There\u2019s reason to believe the weird occurrence is a sign that the pigs have been poisoned. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AYMZK4CCV5CQPFF4IUSI7CT4KI\">\u201cIt\u2019s wild,\u201d Dan Burton, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/how-to-humanely-deal-with-pests-without-using-cruel-traps-or-harmful-chemicals-b2802236.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/how-to-humanely-deal-with-pests-without-using-cruel-traps-or-harmful-chemicals-b2802236.html\">owner of Urban Trapping Wildlife Control<\/a>, who first reported the shocking occurrence, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/wild-pigs-bright-blue-flesh-163748868.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/wild-pigs-bright-blue-flesh-163748868.html\">The Los Angeles Times<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019m not talking about a little blue\u2026 I\u2019m talking about neon blue, blueberry blue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6GLPQDLGNJHD7BR5PIJAZAPSYE\">A statement issued by the CDFW last week said that the pigs in the Monterey County area had been exposed to pesticide bait containing the anticoagulant rodenticide Diphacinone, a poison that prevents blood from clotting and causes internal bleeding in rodents, eventually killing them. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6S4C53FKZNALBGZLLW7G6BBGCI\">Blue tissue and flesh can be a sign of rodenticide ingestion, which can occur by eating bait, which often contains dye to identify them as poison or other animals that have ingested the substance, according to the department. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DGBLVTDWYZFI7JRMX3LHSHPMEM\">But that doesn\u2019t mean such blue discoloration is always present even in contaminated flesh. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JK7FTEQFNVAFLL7XWJNQRKG5NE\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/hunters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Hunters<\/a> should be aware that the meat of game animals, such as wild <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/pig\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pig<\/a>, deer, bear and geese, might be contaminated if that game animal has been exposed to rodenticides,\u201d per the CDFW Pesticide Investigations Coordinator Dr. Ryan Bourbour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PXVNUHGTVFDURONY2TN7PDLCIY\">\u201cRodenticide exposure can be a concern for non-target wildlife in areas where applications occur in close proximity to wildlife habitat,\u201d Bourbor added. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LQ6ZKHTWOFEPPATCCKE7CUWTNM\">The influx of blue pigs in California isn\u2019t the first time this has happened.
