Al Jazeera journalist Anas al-Sharif has been killed alongside three colleagues in what appears to be a targeted Israeli attack, the director of the al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City has said.<\/p>\n
Al-Sharif, 28, was killed on Sunday after a tent for journalists outside the main gate of the hospital was hit. The well-known Al Jazeera Arabic correspondent reportedly extensively from northern Gaza.<\/p>\n
Al Jazeera correspondent Mohammed Qreiqeh and camera operators Ibrahim Zaher and Mohammed Noufal were also among the victims.<\/p>\n
Shortly before being killed, al-Sharif wrote on X that Israel had launched intense, concentrated bombardment \u2013 also known as \u201cfire belts\u201d \u2013 on the eastern and southern parts of Gaza City.<\/p>\n
In his last video, the loud booms of Israel\u2019s intensive missile bombing can be heard in the background as the dark sky is lit in a flash of orange light.<\/p>\n

In a statement announcing the killing of al-Sharif, Israel\u2019s military accused the journalist of heading a Hamas cell and of \u201cadvancing rocket attacks against Israeli civilians and [Israeli] troops.\u201d<\/p>\n
It alleged it possessed documents providing \u201cunequivocal proof\u201d of his involvement with the Palestinian group.<\/p>\n
Muhammed Shehada, an analyst at the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor, said there was \u201czero evidence\u201d that al-Sharif took part in any hostilities. \u201cHis entire daily routine was standing in front of a camera from morning to evening,\u201d he told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n
The Al Jazeera Media Network had recently denounced the Israeli military for what it called a \u201ccampaign of incitement\u201d<\/a> against its reporters in the Gaza Strip, including most notably al-Sharif.<\/p>\n
In July, Israeli army spokesperson Avichai Adraee\u00a0reshared a video<\/a> on social media accusing al-Sharif of being a member of Hamas\u2019s military wing \u2013 a claim that has been forcefully rejected as false.<\/p>\n
Israel has routinely\u00a0accused Palestinian journalists<\/a>\u00a0in Gaza of being members of Hamas since it launched its war on the enclave in October 2023 as part of what rights groups say is an effort to discredit their reporting on Israeli abuses.<\/p>\n
