{"id":135453,"date":"2025-08-10T22:45:08","date_gmt":"2025-08-10T22:45:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/135453\/"},"modified":"2025-08-10T22:45:08","modified_gmt":"2025-08-10T22:45:08","slug":"snapshots-blackhawks-mittelstadt-chelios","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/135453\/","title":{"rendered":"Snapshots: Blackhawks, Mittelstadt, Chelios"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill spoke at length to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/blackhawks\/2025\/08\/10\/blackhawks-coach-jeff-blashill-systems-training-camp-plan-nhl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ben Pope of the Chicago Sun-Times<\/a>\u00a0about his philosophy to steer the team out of its rebuild in an interview published Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>That will revolve around making Chicago\u2019s young forward group more backcheck-oriented. \u201cThe reason for that is, one, it\u2019s a work-ethic indicator,\u201d Blashill said, \u201c\u2026it\u2019s one of the best ways to create transition offensive opportunities \u2014 by being smothering in your effort to come back as forwards. That allows your [defensemen] to gap up, create turnovers and go the other way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Blashill states, that style of play should better suit one of the league\u2019s youngest defense groups that\u2019s heavily stocked with offensive-minded players. Doing so should help accentuate the strengths of names like 2022 No. 7 overall pick\u00a0<strong><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/korchke01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-08-10_hr\">Kevin Korchinski<\/a><\/strong>, looking to get back on his feet after spending most of his sophomore professional season with AHL Rockford.<\/p>\n<p>Blashill also clarified the responsibilities of his assistants. Anders Sorensen, staying on as an assistant after ending last season as their interim head coach, will manage the team\u2019s defensemen. Incoming assistants\u00a0<strong><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/pecami01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-08-10_hr\">Michael Peca<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/v\/vellumi01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-08-10_hr\">Mike Vellucci<\/a> will both work with the forward group, while Peca oversees the penalty kill and Vellucci oversees the power play.<\/p>\n<p>More from around the league this Sunday evening:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A tumultuous run for <strong><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mitteca01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-08-10_hr\">Casey Mittelstadt<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>might continue. Mittelstadt was the most widely known portion of their trade return, but Boston\u2019s focal point in the return for sending Coyle to Colorado was picking up the signing rights to forward prospect\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eliteprospects.com\/player\/673797\/will-zellers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><strong>Will Zellers<\/strong><\/a>, a league source told Murphy. The 2024 third-rounder had 71 points in 52 games for the USHL\u2019s Green Bay Gamblers last season and will kick off his freshman year with North Dakota in a few weeks.<\/li>\n<li>As the KHL\u2019s Kunlun Red Star rebrands to the Shanghai Dragons, defenseman\u00a0<strong><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/chelija01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-08-10_hr\">Jake Chelios<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>won\u2019t be staying with the team, per <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.championat.com\/hockey\/news-6121222-zaschitnik-dzhejk-chelios-pokinul-shanhaj-dregons.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Anton Panchenko of Championat<\/a>. The former Red Wings rearguard and son of Hall-of-Famer <strong><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/chelich01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-08-10_hr\">Chris Chelios<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>had played for Kunlun since the 2019-20 season, ranking as the franchise\u2019s all-time leader in games played. That was long enough for him to obtain Chinese nationality, allowing him to suit up for the country at the 2022 Winter Olympics, 2022 Division 2A World Championship, and the 2023 Division 1B World Championship.
