{"id":135745,"date":"2025-08-11T01:29:20","date_gmt":"2025-08-11T01:29:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/135745\/"},"modified":"2025-08-11T01:29:20","modified_gmt":"2025-08-11T01:29:20","slug":"art-installation-at-lawrence-library-aims-to-inspire-wonder-curiosity-about-native-plants-the-lawrence-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/135745\/","title":{"rendered":"Art installation at Lawrence library aims to inspire wonder, curiosity about native plants \u2013 The Lawrence Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Share this post or save for later<\/p>\n<p>A melange of shadow boxes with seed heads, pressed flowers, prints and faerie doors is on display at the Lawrence Public Library to foster wonder and enthusiasm for native plants and ecosystem diversity.<\/p>\n<p>The installation, created by regional artist Lisa Nelick, can be viewed along the self-check wall at the library as part of their public art display program.<\/p>\n<p>Nelick began crafting these shadowboxes to teach herself about native plants. Alongside artfully pinned seed heads, library patrons will find tags with scientific and common names of the species represented.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was collecting the seeds to try and diversify my prairie, so I needed to know their names,\u201d Nelick said. \u201cIt was educational for me, and I also liked the look of them, so I was making them for my friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1012\" height=\"569\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250808-LPL-Lisa-Nelick-Gallery-04.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-101138\"  \/>Nathan Kramer \/ Lawrence Times<\/p>\n<p>Nelick\u2019s land, which she and her husband call \u201cThe Prairie Harbor,\u201d currently flourishes with native species. Yet when Nelick first moved onto the land, damaging farming practices such as tilling and chemical usage had taken their toll. That didn\u2019t sit right with her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI could just kind of turn it into a native area that could help sustain the wildlife around me,\u201d Nelick said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With financial support from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fsa.usda.gov\/resources\/programs\/conservation-reserve-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Conservation Reserve Program<\/a>, Nelick began a yearslong process of seeding native grasses. Over time, she added more wildflowers and forbs to attract wildlife.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are the species that diversify a grassland, so they support the mammals, the insects and the birds, the snakes and all those things need to live on,\u201d Nelick said. \u201cSo if you put down food for the mice and the voles and the birds, then the other predators will come too, and you\u2019ll have your hawks and your snakes and your bobcats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A section of The Prairie Harbor is now dubbed \u201cfruit central,\u201d and fauna regularly visit to feast on fruit, nuts, bushes and brambles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn spring there is a large wild strawberry patch and mulberry trees; in summer gooseberries, black raspberries, mayapples, hackberries, dewberries, and plums; in fall there are pawpaws, hedge apples, and pecans; in winter rose hips and acorns,\u201d Nelick said via email. \u201cThese are just a few of the native foods that sustain the wild insects, birds, and animals of Prairie Harbor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nelick\u2019s art dances with fanciful imagery \u2014 one piece, akin to a self-contained natural world, has a faerie door to spark the imagination of viewers. The door features a deer tooth with a snapping turtle jaw serving as an awning.<\/p>\n<p>All of the pieces on display are assemblages of found objects that Nelick picked up in wild areas around Lawrence. She hopes her work helps viewers to recognize native species in the wild, while urging them to step into nature with the same sense of curiosity.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1012\" height=\"569\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250808-LPL-Lisa-Nelick-Gallery-01.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-101135\"  \/>Nathan Kramer \/ Lawrence Times<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d like for them to pause at that untended lot at the end of the street and look around to see what\u2019s there,\u201d Nelick said. \u201cBecause we think of all these things as weeds, but a lot of them are actually native plants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nelick\u2019s work will be on display at the library through Sunday, Aug. 31.
