(Photo Credit: Olivier Koning \/ G70)<\/p>\n<p>American Job Centers in Hawai\u2018i are offering free resources to help residents gain the training and connections they need to land in-demand jobs. <\/p>\n<p>Each center on O\u02bbahu, Hawai\u2018i Island, Maui and Kaua\u2018i provides\u00a0one-on-one career counseling, r\u00e9sum\u00e9 and interview support, job search assistance, skills training, tuition support, on-the-job training and employer recruitment services. They also have resource rooms available with computers, internet access and printers.<\/p>\n<p>According to the state labor department, employers continue to face labor shortages in key industries, and job seekers are pursuing new skills and training to meet demand. Over the past year,\u00a0the state gained\u00a014,500\u00a0nonfarm jobs, a 2.3 percent increase, with\u00a0gains\u00a0in health care, private education and trade-related sectors,\u00a0despite a\u00a0decline\u00a0of 1,200 jobs in June.<\/p>\n<p><b>ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW AD<\/b><\/p>\n<p>American Job Centers serve people of all ages and backgrounds, including those facing barriers to employment. <\/p>\n<p>On Hawai\u2018i Island, East Hawai\u2018i resident Kevin Aki first\u00a0connected with\u00a0the Hilo American Job Center at age 17\u00a0while\u00a0experiencing homelessness. <\/p>\n<p>After\u00a0meeting staff at\u00a0a community outreach event, he\u00a0joined\u00a0a youth program that led to an internship and eventually, a long-term career. Today, more than a decade later, Aki works as a Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act specialist at the\u00a0same center.<\/p>\n<p><b>ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW AD<\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I first connected with the American Job Center, I had no idea it would lead to a career,\u201d Aki said. \u201cNow I get to give back and help others build their own futures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW AD<\/b><b>ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW AD<\/b><\/p>\n<p>AJCs also work with businesses to identify hiring needs and develop training opportunities in government, hospitality, health care, retail and other sectors. Services are open to all Hawai\u2018i residents, including veterans, young adults, k\u016bpuna, immigrants, people with disabilities and those experiencing job loss or underemployment.<\/p>\n<p>Centers are open on weekdays\u00a0and offer\u00a0in-person\u00a0and virtual\u00a0support.
