\n\tFive Al Jazeera<\/a> journalists were killed today by an Israeli airstrike near Gaza<\/a> City\u2019s Al-Shifa Hospital. Among them was prominent Arabic correspondent and frontline news reporter Anas al-Sharif<\/a>, who \u2014 alongside Bisan Owda \u2014 received Amnesty International\u2019s Human Rights Defender Award<\/a> in December of last year.<\/p>\n

\n\tColleague Mohammed Qreiqeh and camera operators Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal and Moamen Aliwa were also killed, the network said<\/a>. Two additional people were also killed, including a journalist from another outlet.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn an official statement<\/a> from the broadcaster, Al Jazeera said it \u201ccondemns in the strongest terms the targeted assassination of its correspondents\u201d by the Israeli settlers in \u201cyet another blatant and premeditated attack on press freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe order to assassinate Anas Al Sharif, one of Gaza\u2019s bravest journalists, and his colleagues, is a desperate attempt to silence the voices exposing the impending seizure and occupation of Gaza,\u201d the network added, calling additionally on the international community to \u201ctake decisive measures to halt this ongoing genocide and end the deliberate targeting of journalists.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tJust last month, the Committee to Protect Journalists released a report saying the organization is \u201cgravely worried\u201d about al-Sharif\u2019s safety<\/a>, saying the reporter \u201cis being\u00a0targeted<\/a>\u00a0by an Israeli military smear campaign, which he believes is a precursor to his assassination,\u201d citing a similar statement from Amnesty International Australia. CPJ cited specific concerns regarding false allegations al-Sharif was a \u201cHamas terrorist.\u201d A statement from the United Nations<\/a> published days later echoed these sentiments, saying \u201conline attacks and unfounded accusations by the Israeli army against Al Jazeera journalist Anas Al-Sharif are a blatant attempt to endanger his life and silence his reporting on the genocide in Gaza,\u201d per Irene Khan, the UN Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Opinion and Expression.<\/p>\n

\n\tAccording to multiple<\/a> media<\/a> outlets<\/a>, Israeli military said it targeted al-Sharif specifically, claiming he \u201cserved as the head of a terrorist cell in Hamas\u201d and \u201cwas responsible for advancing rocket attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF troops.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the minutes leading up to his killing, al-Sharif posted to X<\/a>, \u201cIf this madness does not end, Gaza will be reduced to ruins, its people\u2019s voices silenced, their faces erased \u2014 and history will remember you as silent witnesses to a genocide you chose not to stop.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThroughout the war, Israel has not allowed international journalists into Gaza to report freely, with many publications relying on local reporters or citizen journalists within Gaza for coverage. In May 2024, Israeli\u00a0Prime Minister\u00a0Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a> and his government voted to shut down Al Jazeera\u2019s offices<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tAccording to the CPJ, 186 journalists have been killed<\/a> since the start of Israel\u2019s military offensive in Gaza in 2023 following Hamas\u2019 Oct. 7 attack.<\/p>\n
