McDuffie, who tragically died in a 1991 NASCAR race at the track.<\/p>\n<p>McDuffie, 52 at the time, was involved in a Lap 5 accident, with his No. 70 suffering a mechanical failure at the fast right-hand corner known as &#8220;The Loop&#8221;. The car lost control at high speed, left the track, and slammed nearly head-on into a tire barrier and guardrail, leaving the entire front of the car destroyed and killing McDuffie instantly from head injuries.<\/p>\n<p data-mce-linkchecker-status=\"valid\">McDuffie&#8217;s tragic passing came just shy of a decade before <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" title=\"\u2018Dale Earnhardt death changed NASCAR - but I\u2019m proud of what happened after&#039;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.the-express.com\/sport\/motorsport\/163733\/dale-earnhardt-death-nascar-daytona-500\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dale Earnhardt Sr.&#8217;s death at the 2001 Daytona 500<\/a>, with the pair two of around 108 drivers in total to die while competing. He competed in a whopping 653 NASCAR races and recorded 106 top-ten finishes. However, McDuffie never once finished on the lead lap.<\/p>\n<p>Friend and fellow competitor Jimmy Means recounted the horror crash that took McDuffie&#8217;s life.<\/p>\n<p><a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.the-express.com\/newsletter-preference-centre\/?view=Solus&amp;mailingListId=9761f86a-69c1-4771-b7da-6a7feddacc61&amp;utm_source=solusarticle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Sign up to our NASCAR newsletter here.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cActually, he (McDuffie) was behind me when we went into that corner. He was racing me so hard,\u201d Means recalled to Speed Sport Magazine. \u201cI remember commenting to myself, \u2018Dang, J.D., you\u2019re all over me.\u2019 I remember thinking, \u2018J.D. is tough today.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I turned off into the corner and something broke on his car right behind me. When he got to the corner, I was turning, and he couldn\u2019t turn. He hit my nose and turned me into the fence and hit me. His car got into the air and turned sideways and there was nothing he could do. If we had the seats we have today he would have walked away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>DON&#8217;T MISS&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ernie Irvan went on to win the 1991 Budweiser race and went to Victory Lane. However, the win was far from sweet, following the loss of a rival. \u201cAfter all I\u2019ve been through, this is a great victory, but winning is tempered by J.D.\u2019s death,\u201d Irvan said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI dedicate this victory to him. Every time we went through the turn where he crashed, I thought about him. I\u2019ve known what it is like to struggle in this sport without a sponsor just like he did, and I\u2019ll always remember him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McDuffie was loved by NASCAR fans, particularly for his blue-collar background. Longtime motorsports writer and sports editor for the <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/eu.fayobserver.com\/story\/sports\/motorsports\/2022\/08\/17\/nascar-jd-mcduffie-remembered-anniversary-his-death-watkins-glen\/10313832002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Fayetteville Observer<\/a>, Thomas Pope, paid tribute to the late NASCAR star.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRace fans loved J.D. because he was a blue-collar race car driver,\u201d Pope said. \u201cThey were amazed that he could race against the best in the world at NASCAR\u2019s highest level on the budget he had using the parts and pieces that he had.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Somehow, he made it work for a very long time.
