{"id":137001,"date":"2025-08-11T13:11:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-11T13:11:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/137001\/"},"modified":"2025-08-11T13:11:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-11T13:11:11","slug":"glenn-frey-and-jimmy-buffett-memorialized-their-wild-parties-in-aspen-on-the-only-song-they-would-ever-write-together","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/137001\/","title":{"rendered":"Glenn Frey and Jimmy Buffett Memorialized Their Wild Parties in Aspen on the Only Song They Would Ever Write Together"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 1975, <a href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/tag\/jimmy-buffett\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Jimmy Buffett<\/a> struck up what would become a lifelong friendship with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/tag\/the-eagles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Eagles<\/a> after opening for the band on August 3 of that year at a show in Columbia, South Carolina. \u201cWaiting to go on that night seemed like an eternity,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/rock\/glenn-frey-jimmy-buffett-remembrance-tribute-statement-friends-6851110\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">remembered Buffett<\/a>, following\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/tag\/Glenn-Frey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Glenn Frey<\/a>\u2018s death in 2016. \u201cMixed emotions were flowing, fear, excitement, and a lot of \u2018what ifs\u2019 were running through my head when the door suddenly opened, and in walked Glenn Frey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That night was the first time Buffett met Frey, who put him immediately at ease. \u201cHe greeted me and the band warmly, thanked us for being there, and said to me how much he loved \u2018A Pirate Looks at 40,\u2019  recalled Buffett. \u201cHe wished us luck and then went back out the door. That was the beginning of a long and lovely friendship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Buffett eventually broke out in 1977 with his album Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes and hit anthem \u201cMargaritaville,\u201d he kicked off the year opening for the Eagles on their <a href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/tag\/hotel-california\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Hotel California<\/a> tour. Several years later, the Eagles also invited Buffett to sing backing vocals on the Frey and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/tag\/don-henley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Don Henley<\/a>-penned \u201cThe Greeks Don\u2019t Want No Freaks,\u201d from the band\u2019s sixth album,\u00a0The Long Run.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/4-songs-you-didnt-know-the-eagles-glenn-frey-wrote-for-other-artists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">[RELATED: 4 Songs You Didn\u2019t Know Glenn Frey Wrote for Other Artists]<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" height=\"410\" width=\"1024\" viewbox=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-1325058642.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-9004111231579836\"\/>Jimmy Buffett performs at the US Festival at Glen Helen Regional Park, San Bernardino, California, September 5, 1982. (Photo by Bromberger Hoover Photography\/Getty Images)Mad Dog Ranch<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Buffett said the Eagles had a significant impact on his career from their first meeting in 1975. \u201cOnly a few people really know how significant Glenn, Don, Irving [Eagles manager Irving Azoff], and the Eagles were to my rise through the ranks of bands trying to achieve just of sliver of the success that they had achieved,\u201d said Buffett, who also inducted the band into the Rock &amp; Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the Eagles were inducted into the Rock &amp; Roll Hall of Fame, they asked me to give their induction speech,\u201d Buffett added. \u201cI was humbled. Glenn was a true friend, a true professional, an inspiration, and sometimes could be a handful. I cherish great memories of our time spent together and will never forget his kindness that first night and our friendship for all these years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the years, Frey continued to collaborate with Buffett, and by the mid-\u201980s, the two also became neighbors in Aspen, Colorado. Frey also purchased Mad Dog Ranch from Buffett and converted it into a studio in 1986. Located in Old Snowmass in the Rocky Mountains, the space became a regular recording studio for Frey and was where he recorded his 1992 solo album, Strange Weather.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Last Mango in Paris\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">It was Mad Dog that also inspired the only song Frey and Buffett would ever collaborate on, \u201cGypsies in the Palace,\u201d released on Buffett\u2019s 1985 album\u00a0Last Mango in Paris.
