{"id":137218,"date":"2025-08-11T15:05:16","date_gmt":"2025-08-11T15:05:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/137218\/"},"modified":"2025-08-11T15:05:16","modified_gmt":"2025-08-11T15:05:16","slug":"septa-cuts-pennsylvania-house-makes-last-ditch-effort","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/137218\/","title":{"rendered":"SEPTA cuts: Pennsylvania House makes last-ditch effort"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pennsylvania\u2019s House of Representatives met hastily Monday to pass transportation funding legislation in a last-ditch effort to stave off\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/septa-philadelphia-mass-transit-fare-increase-8824fabf74fdade940cc0454b9cae520\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deep service cuts<\/a>\u00a0at the Philadelphia region\u2019s public transit agency.\n<\/p>\n<p>The Democratic-backed bill passed the chamber, 108-95, over the objection of nearly every Republican in the chamber.\n<\/p>\n<p>The nearly $1 billion bill has the support of Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro, and includes funding for highways, too. But it faces an uncertain future in the Republican-controlled Senate, where the GOP majority has resisted increasing aid for transit.\n<\/p>\n<p>The bill increases aid for transit agency operations by $292 million, or about 25% more, with the lion\u2019s share of the money going to the Philadelphia-based Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority.\n  <\/p>\n<p>SEPTA has said it cannot keep waiting for more aid before it makes cuts, which it says would be more drastic than any undertaken by a major transit agency in the United States.\n<\/p>\n<p>The nation\u2019s sixth-largest public transit system has warned that it will cut half its services by Jan. 1 and be unable to provide enhanced service for major tourist events next year.
