{"id":137539,"date":"2025-08-11T17:55:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-11T17:55:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/137539\/"},"modified":"2025-08-11T17:55:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-11T17:55:09","slug":"metro-vancouver-now-under-heat-warning-along-with-much-of-southern-b-c","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/137539\/","title":{"rendered":"Metro Vancouver now under heat warning, along with much of southern B.C."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Residents in Metro Vancouver,\u00a0much of southern B.C. and Vancouver Island should prepare for hot weather over the next two days,\u00a0according to Environment Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Heat advisories <a href=\"https:\/\/weather.gc.ca\/?center=49.91024797,-122.08391617&amp;zoom=7&amp;alertTableFilterProv=BC&amp;alertsublayers=wx,aq,cf,hwy,tsu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">have been issued<\/a> for regions including Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley, adding to warnings for east and inland Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast, Whistler and Pemberton in the Sea-to-Sky region, as well as the Fraser Canyon, South Thompson, South Okanagan and North Thompson.<\/p>\n<p>Daytime temperatures could reach 33 C in certain areas of Metro Vancouver, according to the Environment Canada alert, with overnight lows near 17 C.<\/p>\n<p>Some areas near the water and the southwestern section of Metro Vancouver will &#8220;likely get a reprieve from the heat,&#8221; added the alert.<\/p>\n<p>In the\u00a0Fraser Canyon, South Thompson and South Okanagan, Environment Canada said temperatures could near 35 C, while coastal areas including the Island, Whistler and Pemberton could reach 30 C.<\/p>\n<p>Environment Canada expects the temperatures for all regions to cool down on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>How to beat the heat<\/p>\n<p>Some Metro Vancouver municipalities are opening up cooling centres to support residents.<\/p>\n<p>Many community centres and libraries in Vancouver become cooling centres during heat warnings. The city provides a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/experience.arcgis.com\/experience\/5e141c0d874745c09bb7fc69f0e819a0?_ga=2.126501709.1747263533.1754921103-999591171.1753188621\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">map of facilities<\/a> that have air conditioning, along with wading pools, spray parks and misting stations.<\/p>\n<p>The City of Burnaby\u00a0has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.burnaby.ca\/our-city\/news\/2025-08-11\/city-burnaby-opening-cooling-centres-provide-heat-relief\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">opened four cooling centres<\/a> from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.\u00a0Burnaby&#8217;s centres are air-conditioned and have seating, drinking water, washrooms and free Wi-Fi.<\/p>\n<p>Other municipalities, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portcoquitlam.ca\/services\/public-safety\/emergency-preparedness\/extreme-weather\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Port Coquitlam<\/a>\u00a0and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnv.org\/home-property\/emergency-preparedness\/extreme-heat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">City of North Vancouver<\/a>, have\u00a0also invited residents to cool off in their\u00a0air-conditioned community centres.<\/p>\n<p>WorkSafeBC has reminded Lower Mainland employers to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worksafebc.com\/en\/resources\/health-safety\/books-guides\/preventing-heat-stress-at-work?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">keep their workers safe in the heat<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>WorkSafeBC accepted 315 heat-related injury claims between 2020 and 2024, with the highest numbers in transportation, public works, construction, food services, and film and television production, according to a news release.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Maulik Baxi, a medical health officer at the Fraser Health Authority, advised British Columbians and travellers to be aware of the heat warnings around the province.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We know that it is summer, it&#8217;s vacation time in schools, lots of people will be travelling,&#8221; Baxi said. &#8220;So while it may not be affecting where you live, it may be affecting where you go. And so be aware.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Baxi advised people to check on vulnerable people who may be more at risk of getting a heat-prone illness, such as young infants, seniors, pregnant people and anyone with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>People should avoid the heat of the day as much as possible, and stay cool by opening windows at night, when heat can build up inside homes, he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Be a good neighbour, you know, and take care of one another.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Environment Canada said heat affects everyone but added the risks are greater for seniors, people who live alone, people with certain pre-existing health conditions or mental illness, people with substance use disorders and people with limited mobility.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Check on family, friends and neighbours, who are at higher risk, particularly if they live alone, to make sure they have a cool space.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The forecaster also warned to check for early signs of heat illness, which include feeling unwell, fatigue, thirst, headache, or unusually dark urine, which can &#8220;rapidly evolve into life-threatening emergencies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If that happens, move to a cooler environment immediately, Environment Canada said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Drink plenty of water regularly, even before you feel thirsty to decrease your risk of dehydration.
