At a news conference Tuesday,<a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11259152\/danielle-smith-alberta-next-panel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> she announced details of its work and named its 15 members.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the same time, six online surveys <a href=\"https:\/\/www.albertanextpanel.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">were launched on the panel\u2019s website<\/a>, which are to help inform what questions the government puts to a referendum next year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Alberta isn\u2019t satisfied with the number or kind of newcomers moving to our province, we may have the option to withhold provincial social programs to any non-citizen or non-permanent resident who does not have an Alberta-approved immigration status,\u201d says a video participants are required to view <a href=\"https:\/\/www.albertanextpanel.ca\/survey\/survey-immigration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">before taking the immigration survey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The speaker in the video says although the federal government decides who is let into Canada, provinces pay for most social programs that they need.<\/p>\n<p>The video says immigration is to blame for high housing costs and unemployment rates, adding that \u201cmany of the divisions and disputes that plague other countries have begun making their way into ours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first of two survey questions on the topic asks how Albertans feel about last year\u2019s immigration level.<\/p>\n<p>The second asks whether the province should refuse to provide programs to non-citizens and non-permanent residents \u201cunless they have been granted an Alberta government-approved immigration permit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The surveys also ask about a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.albertanextpanel.ca\/survey\/survey-alberta-pension-plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">provincial pension plan<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.albertanextpanel.ca\/survey\/survey-provincial-police-force\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">provincial police force<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.albertanextpanel.ca\/survey\/survey-tax-collection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tax collection<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.albertanextpanel.ca\/survey\/survey-constitutional-changes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">constitutional changes<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.albertanextpanel.ca\/survey\/survey-federal-transfers-and-equalization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">federal transfers and equalization<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the news conference, Smith said six issues had been put forward by a previous panel that she thinks Albertans might want to have a referendum on, but she didn\u2019t provide details.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Premier unveils \u2018Alberta Next\u2019 panel to counter Ottawa'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/YYC-TUE_ALBERTA_NEXT_MACVICAR.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t2:01<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPremier unveils \u2018Alberta Next\u2019 panel to counter Ottawa\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>She said she doesn\u2019t want to prejudge what ideas or proposals might be considered for a referendum. For immigration, a video notes the federal government would likely take Alberta to court. It says a more hands-on approach would cost more, though that could be offset \u201cin corresponding savings to our social programs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A video also suggests setting up an Alberta revenue agency for tax collection, but notes that it would require 5,000 new public employees and annual budgets of at least $750 million per year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe time is right for this critical discussion,\u201d said Smith.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"c-blockquote l-article__blockquote\">\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cWe\u2019ll be travelling the province, seeking input in no less significant topic than the future of Alberta itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The premier is leading the 15-member panel, which includes three United Conservative Party legislature members: Brandon Lunty, Glenn van Dijken and the party\u2019s newest MLA, Tara Sawyer, who won a byelection Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Environment Minister Rebecca Schulz is on the panel along with two oil and gas executives and Business Council of Alberta president Adam Legge.
