{"id":138410,"date":"2025-08-12T01:32:18","date_gmt":"2025-08-12T01:32:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/138410\/"},"modified":"2025-08-12T01:32:18","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T01:32:18","slug":"nycs-newyorktlan-festival-highlights-indigenous-traditions-and-resilience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/138410\/","title":{"rendered":"NYC&#8217;s NewYorkTlan Festival Highlights Indigenous Traditions and Resilience"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"w-full pb-6 text-neutral-800 text-[20px] font-serif !mb-0\">In the South Bronx on Sunday, August 10, the annual NewYorkTlan festival brought together indigenous communities from across New York City for a day of food, music and tradition. <\/p>\n<p class=\"w-full pb-6 text-neutral-800 text-[20px] font-serif !mb-0\">Organized by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pueblostransnacionales.org\/\" class=\"text-[#ef4444]\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Red de Pueblos Transnacionales<\/a>, a network of indigenous and rural immigrant groups in New York City, the event featured dances, musical performances, storytelling and vendors offering goods like tamales, aguas frescas, handmade jewelry, embroidered clothing and herbs. The festival was created in 2014 to celebrate indigenous identities often overshadowed by homogenized representations of Latin American culture.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"w-full pb-6 text-neutral-800 text-[20px] font-serif !mb-0\">\u201cWe wanted to create an event that prioritizes indigenous voices, languages and traditions,\u201d said Marco Castillo, one of the founders of Red de Pueblos Transnacionales.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Immigration News, Curated<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sign up<\/strong> to get our curation of news, insights on<br \/>\n          big stories, job announcements, and events happening in immigration.\n        <\/p>\n<p>        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/logoDocumentedNewsletter.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"h-20\"\/><\/p>\n<p> Please check your email for further<br \/>\n          instructions.\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"w-full pb-6 text-neutral-800 text-[20px] font-serif !mb-0\">This year, amid the steep <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecity.nyc\/2025\/07\/14\/ice-migrant-arrests-trump-administration-deportations-data\/\" class=\"text-[#ef4444]\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increase in deportations<\/a> and ICE raids under the Trump administration, the gathering was moved indoors and made invitation-only.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"w-full pb-6 text-neutral-800 text-[20px] font-serif !mb-0\">\u201cIn this time of terror and hate,\u201d Castillo said, \u201cit\u2019s important to remember that many of these cultures have been here for longer than the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"w-full pb-6 text-neutral-800 text-[20px] font-serif !mb-0\">Iakowi:he\u2019ne\u2019 Oakes, founder and director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naicny.org\/\" class=\"text-[#ef4444]\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North American Indigenous Center of New York<\/a>, attended NewYorkTlan to take part in the festival and help foster connections between groups.
