PHOENIX \u2014 Phoenix police say a teenager was killed in a shooting in north Phoenix late Sunday night. <\/p>\n

Officers were called to a motel near 27th Avenue and Union Hills Drive around 10:45 p.m. for reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they found a victim on the ground with a gunshot wound. <\/p>\n

Police say the victim, identified as a teenage boy, died at the scene. <\/p>\n

During an investigation, Phoenix police detectives learned the victim’s mother, a 40-year-old woman, allowed the victim and his teenage brother to handle a firearm while inside their motel room. A short time later, the gun went off and the victim was struck.<\/p>\n

Detectives also learned the mother left the scene shortly after police arrived, but was taken into custody when she returned.<\/p>\n

She was later arrested and booked into jail to face multiple charges, including child abuse.<\/p>\n

No other details have been provided.<\/p>\n

The investigation remains ongoing.<\/p>\n
