{"id":139583,"date":"2025-08-12T11:51:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-12T11:51:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/139583\/"},"modified":"2025-08-12T11:51:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T11:51:11","slug":"sam-querrey-goes-in-on-naomi-osaka-after-her-runners-up-speech-in-canada-it-drives-me-nuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/139583\/","title":{"rendered":"Sam Querrey goes in on Naomi Osaka after her runners-up speech in Canada, &#8216;it drives me nuts&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Naomi Osaka impressed on court at the Canadian Open as she reached the final, but her runners-up speech has overshadowed her efforts.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/naomi-osaka-incredibly-snubs-victoria-mboko-in-brief-runners-up-speech-after-losing-the-canadian-open-final\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Osaka did not congratulate Victoria Mboko<\/a> after their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/canadian-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canadian Open<\/a> final, which the home favourite won 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/naomi-osaka-slammed-for-what-she-did-immediately-after-losing-to-victoria-mboko-as-shes-labelled-classless\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tennis fans slammed Osaka<\/a> for not referencing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/victoria-mboko\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mboko<\/a> after their battle, with the former world number one having understandably been upset following the loss.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/naomi-osaka-issues-public-apology-to-victoria-mboko-after-canadian-open-final-i-want-to-say-sorry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Osaka has apologised for not congratulating Mboko<\/a>, who clinched her first career title at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/wta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WTA<\/a> 1000 event earlier this month<\/p>\n<p>The WTA Tour has since moved on to the Cincinnati Open, although both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/naomi-osaka\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Osaka<\/a> and Mboko have opted to skip the tournament.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2228241415-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Naomi Osaka looks emotional after losing the 2025 WTA 1000 National Bank Open presented by Rogers\" class=\"wp-image-118975\" \/>Photo by Minas Panagiotakis\/Getty ImagesSam Querrey criticises Naomi Osaka after her speech at the Canadian Open<\/p>\n<p>But Osaka\u2019s post-match actions have remained in the spotlight, and have now been discussed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/sam-querrey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sam Querrey<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/steve-johnson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Steve Johnson<\/a> on the Nothing Major Show.<\/p>\n<p>Querrey said: \u201cCan Osaka not just act like an adult for five minutes? Just give a nice speech, fake it for a minute and then move on to the locker room. Look, as athletes you take the good with the bad. You can\u2019t just take praise when you are playing well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI get it\u2019s a tough moment, we had [Aryna] Sabalenka do the same, and we have seen it on the men\u2019s side too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I don\u2019t think Sabalenka deserves what she got after the French Open talking about that loss, because she was critical of her own game and didn\u2019t thank Coco [Gauff].<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2228241781-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Naomi Osaka speaks into a microphone\" class=\"wp-image-119072\" \/>Photo by Minas Panagiotakis\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a way it\u2019s like you get to the biggest stage and you lose and you talk to the press 10 minutes later, you haven\u2019t had time to process it and your mind is not that clear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody on their regular day job is getting talked about like \u2018did you have a bad day at the office?\u2019. Sometimes it is hard and she is going to figure it out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut at least give an honest answer and thank your opponent. Do these things and move on. I know it\u2019s hard to do but as an athlete that is your job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sam Querrey and Steve Johnson agree over Naomi Osaka\u2019s actions in Canada<\/p>\n<p>Querrey was also quick to mention Osaka\u2019s prize money from her lengthy run in Montreal, and indeed her impressive efforts throughout the event.<\/p>\n<p>He noted: \u201cShe is also going to make $30 million, you can\u2019t just shy away from that. Give a decent speech, congratulate your opponent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut having said that, great week for Osaka.
