A 23-year-old man is set to appear at the Montreal courthouse to face charges for the assault of a Jewish man at a park with the victim’s children just steps away.<\/p>\n
Sergio Yanes Preciado has been charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm. The Service de police de la Ville de Montr\u00e9al arrested him on Monday.<\/p>\n
The incident, which was partially captured on video,\u00a0sparked public\u00a0outcry and renewed calls for elected officials to do more to address antisemitism.<\/p>\n
The attack happened Friday at Dickie-Moore Park near the corner of Beaumont\u00a0and de l’\u00c9p\u00e9e\u00a0avenues just before 2:30\u00a0p.m.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The 28-second video circulating online begins with the assailant straddling and striking the 32-year-old victim, who is on the ground, several times.<\/p>\n
The victim\u00a0gets up on his knees and one of his children can be seen clinging\u00a0to him. The attacker\u00a0picks up some belongings in a grocery bag\u00a0and then tosses what appears to be\u00a0a kippa, a head covering worn by Jewish men and boys, into a splash pad area.<\/p>\n
‘Emotionally, it’s definitely taking a toll’<\/p>\n
Mayer Feig, a spokesperson\u00a0for Montreal’s Hasidic Jewish community, told CBC News that he has been in constant communication with the man who was attacked.<\/p>\n
He also confirmed the victim is a member of his community.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He said three children were present at the time of the attack\u00a0\u2014 ages nine, six\u00a0and three.<\/p>\n
He said the 32-year-old man suffered several facial bruises and a broken nose.<\/p>\n
He added that the victim\u00a0is\u00a0“very, very, very traumatized.”<\/p>\n
“They’re not doing well as a family,” Feig said. “Emotionally, it’s taking a toll.”<\/p>\n
Jeremy Levi, the mayor of Hampstead, a municipality on the island of Montreal,\u00a0posted the video on X last\u00a0Friday, describing the incident as\u00a0“beyond deplorable” and an “outrage against basic human decency.”<\/p>\n
Over the weekend, Prime Minister Mark Carney released a statement about the attack, writing\u00a0on X that it “was an appalling act of violence.”<\/p>\n
“Everyone in Canada has an inalienable right to live in safety,” he wrote.<\/p>\n
Feig says, based on what he has told by the victim, the assailant didn’t say anything during the attack. But he said he believes\u00a0what took place qualifies as a hate crime.<\/p>\n
