{"id":140526,"date":"2025-08-12T20:10:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-12T20:10:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/140526\/"},"modified":"2025-08-12T20:10:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T20:10:09","slug":"far-right-afd-takes-lead-in-germany-says-bombshell-new-survey-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/140526\/","title":{"rendered":"Far-right AfD takes lead in Germany, says bombshell new survey \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In Britain, Nigel Farage\u2019s hard-right Reform UK is also topping polls amid broad public dissatisfaction with Prime Minister Keir Starmer\u2019s Labour government.<\/p>\n<p>While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/europe-poll-of-polls\/germany\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">POLITICO\u2019s Poll of Polls<\/a> shows that Germany\u2019s conservative Christian Democrats maintain a slight lead over the AfD in an aggregation of voter surveys, the far-right party has climbed since snagging almost 21 percent of the vote in February\u2019s federal election, its best-ever result. The AfD is now the largest opposition party in Germany\u2019s Bundestag.<\/p>\n<p>The AfD was initially founded as a single-issue party more than a decade ago by a group of economics professors who, in the midst of Europe\u2019s debt crisis, opposed the euro and financial help for debt-ridden countries.\u00a0It regularly scored single-digit results in federal and state elections in its early years.<\/p>\n<p>Now led by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/german-election-2025-results-alice-weidel-afd-moment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">openly radical Alice Weidel<\/a>, a former economist, the AfD currently pushes a hard-line anti-migrant and right-wing populist positions. Some mainstream politicians argue the party is so extreme that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/alternative-for-germany-afd-ban-debate-far-right-german-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it ought to be banned<\/a> under provisions of the German constitution designed to prevent a repeat of the country\u2019s Nazi past. <\/p>\n<p>Forsa\u2019s poll also indicated that, as Merz focuses on foreign policy issues like the war in Ukraine and Europe\u2019s relationship with the U.S. under President Donald Trump, he\u2019s in growing political trouble at home.
