She was 60.<\/p>\n<p>Spencer died Monday after she \u201clost her battle with cancer,\u201d her  brother, jazz trumpeter Jeremy Pelt, announced on <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/jeremypeltthegriot\/p\/DNPmWWytyb-\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Instagram<\/a>. Spencer had  suffered other health issues \u2014 including a bleeding hematoma and a spinal cord injury \u2014 throughout her life. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of you knew her as \u2018Dee,\u2019 but she was more than a child actress,\u201d Pelt captioned  the carousel of photos  of his sister. \u201cShe was a friend, an auntie to my three children who adored her, she was a daughter \u2014 and in many ways, my mother\u2019s best friend, she was a veterinarian, she was someone who always remained positive even during her darkest days fighting this disease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pelt added: \u201cShe was MY sister and protector.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Haywood Nelson, one of Spencer\u2019s \u201cWhat\u2019s Happening!!\u201d co-stars, told the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/danielle-spencer-dead-whats-happening-1236342214\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hollywood Reporter<\/a> that \u201cshe suffered for a very long time but did it with a great deal of courage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Spencer was best known for her work on \u201cWhat\u2019s Happening!!,\u201d which aired on ABC from  1976 to  1979. The Watts-set sitcom followed a trio of teens and also featured Ernest Thomas, Fred Berry, Mabel King and Shirley Hemphill. Spencer portrayed the meddling younger sister to Thomas\u2019 Roger \u201cRaj\u201d Thomas. As Dee, Spencer garnered laughs for her deadpan delivery, dry humor and no-nonsense approach to family antics.<\/p>\n<p>A constant thorn in her brother\u2019s side, Spencer\u2019s Dee also delivered memorable lines including \u201cOoh, I\u2019m gonna tell Mama!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During her time on \u201cWhat\u2019s Happening!!\u201d in 1977, Spencer and her stepfather Tim Pelt were involved in a severe car accident. The crash killed Pelt and left Spencer with health complications that would affect her later in life. After the accident, Spencer was in a coma for three weeks and suffered  broken bones in her leg, arm and pelvis, according to her <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/daniellespencerworld.com\/biography\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>. In 2018, she underwent surgery for a bleeding hematoma that resulted from the crash. <\/p>\n<p>Spencer had to use a wheelchair and underwent rehab to learn how to walk again in the early aughts. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014 \u2014 she said her family has a history with breast cancer \u2014 and got a double mastectomy shortly after. <\/p>\n<p>After \u201cWhat\u2019s Happening!!\u201d ended in 1979, Spencer reprised her role for the syndicated sequel series \u201cWhat\u2019s Happening Now!,\u201d which aired from 1985 to 1988. Spencer last appeared in a minor role on the long-running daytime drama \u201cDays of Our Lives\u201d in 2001. Her acting credits also include \u201cThe Brady Bunch Variety Hour\u201d and the Jack Nicholson film \u201cAs Good as It Gets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After her acting career waned, Spencer shifted her focus to her studies, attending UC Davis and UCLA and eventually earning her doctorate in veterinary medicine from Tuskegee University in 1993, according to THR. She practiced in the Los Angeles area before moving to Richmond, Va., where she would return to TV in a different capacity. <\/p>\n<p>She often appeared on CBS affiliate WTVR\u2019s morning news programming, sharing her <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wtvr.com\/2014\/03\/07\/pet-tips-by-dr-danielle-spencer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expertise on pet care<\/a>. In 2014, she became the first child star inducted into Smithsonian\u2019s National Museum of African American History &amp; Culture, where her work as Dee Thomas became a permanent fixture. <\/p>\n<p>Of the honor, she told <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/blackamericaweb.com\/2014\/10\/20\/former-child-star-danielle-spencer-talks-personal-battle-with-breast-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BlackAmericaWeb.com in 2014<\/a>, \u201cI still can\u2019t believe it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s something people can look at for years to come, long after I\u2019m gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Spencer was born June 24, 1965 and raised in the Bronx. She also authored a <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Through-Fire-Journal-child-star\/dp\/1451596502\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">memoir<\/a> about her childhood stardom and pursued various business ventures including a candle line and clothing brand.
