shot and killed by a security guard behind an auto body shop<\/a> on Monday night.<\/p>\nPolice said just after 10 p.m. Monday, a security guard encountered Eric Rodriguez and a friend in the drainage area behind Crash Champions, located on the 700 block of SW Military Drive.\u00a0<\/p>\n
An argument reportedly broke out and investigators said the guard believed Rodriguez had a weapon and shot him in the chest. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.<\/p>\n
His family, however, says the shooting was senseless and unwarranted.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe wasn\u2019t trying to break into the property or anything,\u201d said Ida, Rodriguez\u2019s sister. \u201cHe wasn\u2019t homeless but he would come and feed everybody. He would bring them food and water.\u201d<\/p>\n
Rodriguez, a father of six, was known to regularly help people living in the area, especially those without housing, according to his family.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe wasn\u2019t out here causing trouble. He was on his way home,\u201d said Amanda, the mother of Rodriguez\u2019s children. \u201cI believe that security guard should\u2019ve stayed on his premises.\u201d<\/p>\n
His family disputes the guard’s claim that Rodriguez had a weapon.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s never carried anything on him, weapon-wise,\u201d Amanda said.<\/p>\n
The security guard was detained by officers at the scene. He has not been charged with a crime.<\/p>\n
Rodriguez\u2019s sister says the family is planning to contact the business and the security agency involved to better understand what happened and whether protocol was followed.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want to know what the rules are,\u201d she said. \u201cHe shouldn\u2019t have been shot just for being out here.\u201d<\/p>\n
KENS 5 reached out to Crash Champions for comment.
