{"id":141499,"date":"2025-08-13T04:44:14","date_gmt":"2025-08-13T04:44:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/141499\/"},"modified":"2025-08-13T04:44:14","modified_gmt":"2025-08-13T04:44:14","slug":"materialists-director-calls-broke-man-propaganda-commentary-cruel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/141499\/","title":{"rendered":"Materialists\u00a0Director Calls &#8216;Broke Man Propaganda&#8217; Commentary &#8216;Cruel&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/materialists\/\" id=\"auto-tag_materialists_1\" data-tag=\"materialists\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Materialists<\/a> filmmaker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/celine-song\/\" id=\"auto-tag_celine-song_1\" data-tag=\"celine-song\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Celine Song<\/a>\u00a0is clapping back at those who have described her film as \u201cbroke man propaganda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tDuring a recent interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@refinery29\/video\/7536286483540610335?lang=en\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@refinery29\/video\/7536286483540610335?lang=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Refinery29<\/a>, the writer-director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/materialists-celine-song-cast-romantic-comedy-drama-twist-1236291570\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/materialists-celine-song-cast-romantic-comedy-drama-twist-1236291570\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">behind the romance movie<\/a> responded to the \u201cvery cruel\u201d commentary surrounding the relationship between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/dakota-johnson\/\" id=\"auto-tag_dakota-johnson_1\" data-tag=\"dakota-johnson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dakota Johnson<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/chris-evans\/\" id=\"auto-tag_chris-evans_1\" data-tag=\"chris-evans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chris Evans<\/a>\u2018 characters, Lucy and John.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI think that it doesn\u2019t make me laugh, because it really is disappointing to me,\u201d Song said. \u201cI think that there is a very real confusion about feminism and the history of feminism. Through intersectionality, so much of feminism has been about anti-corporate and anti-capitalist and, of course, it was always at the forefront of fighting capitalism, so I\u2019m very concerned about the way that we talk about people who are poor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe Past Lives director continued, \u201cThe thing that\u2019s very important to me is to stress that poverty is not the fault of the poor. And I think that given that, it is very brutal. I find it very cruel to talk about John as a character who loves Lucy, and who is a beautiful character being played beautifully by Chris, to talk about him in such cruel terms as \u2018broke boy\u2019 or \u2018broke man.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/materialists-review-dakota-johnson-chris-evans-pedro-pascal-1236257284\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/materialists-review-dakota-johnson-chris-evans-pedro-pascal-1236257284\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Materialists<\/a> follows Lucy, a young, ambitious New York City matchmaker who finds herself torn between the perfect match, wealthy financier Harry (Pedro Pascal), and her imperfect ex-boyfriend, struggling actor John.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThere is something about the classism of that, the kind of hatred of poverty, the hatred of poor people, who, again, it\u2019s not their fault that they\u2019re poor,\u201d Song added. \u201cI think that is a very troubling result of the way that the wealthy people have gotten into our hearts about how it\u2019s your fault if you\u2019re poor, you\u2019re a bad person if you\u2019re poor. So it doesn\u2019t make me laugh, actually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/my-best-friends-wedding-sequel-celine-song-1236332880\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/my-best-friends-wedding-sequel-celine-song-1236332880\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The filmmaker <\/a>continued, \u201cIt makes me feel very concerned that anybody would talk about my movie and my characters and to really think about it in such classist terms.
