Chubby Checker, the singer and dancer known for his iconic 1960 cover of \u201cThe Twist<\/a>,\u201d has spilled on why he\u2019s skipping his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame later this year following a nearly four-decade-long wait.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told my manager, I said, \u2018Make sure when we go to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the induction, that I\u2019m doing what I love doing the most: Being in front of an audience. A live audience, not a television audience,\u2019\u201d said Checker in a clip shared by Future Rock Legends<\/a> from a show in Des Plaines, Illinois last month.<\/p>\n

After his manager booked him a show, he claimed the hall told him to \u201cforget\u201d about his gig.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe never forget about gigs,\u201d Checker stressed.<\/p>\n

The 83-year-old rocker, whose birth name is Ernest Evans, recalled his childhood hopes of becoming a \u201cstar\u201d and said every time he plays, his \u201cdream\u201d is \u201crenewed.\u201d<\/p>\n

He went on to dismiss critics who may see him as \u201cold,\u201d \u201cretired\u201d and \u201cnot doing anything\u201d on the day of the ceremony.<\/p>\n

Checker was eligible for induction into the hall since its first class in 1986, but he wasn\u2019t nominated until this year.<\/p>\n

Over the course of his career, Checker helped popularize the Pony and Limbo dance crazes with his songs \u201cPony Time<\/a>\u201d and \u201cLimbo Rock<\/a>,\u201d respectively.<\/p>\n

His cover of \u201cThe Twist\u201d \u2014 written and released by 1990 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Hank Ballard and his group, the Midnighters (who were inducted separately as a group in 2012) \u2014 became a smash hit in 1960.<\/p>\n

The song notably topped Billboard\u2019s list of all-time No. 1 singles on its Hot 100 charts from 2008 through most of 2020 before The Weeknd\u2019s \u201cBlinding Lights\u201d took the crown that September<\/a>.<\/p>\n

At his Illinois show, Checker accepted a statue from the hall<\/a> before a sea of adoring fans, noting that he\u2019ll now be \u201cilluminated by all the good things\u201d that have happened in his life every time he travels through the hall\u2019s home of Cleveland, Ohio.<\/p>\n
