{"id":141694,"date":"2025-08-13T06:29:25","date_gmt":"2025-08-13T06:29:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/141694\/"},"modified":"2025-08-13T06:29:25","modified_gmt":"2025-08-13T06:29:25","slug":"city-council-hopes-to-land-big-changes-at-jacksonville-aviation-authority-action-news-jax","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/141694\/","title":{"rendered":"City Council hopes to land big changes at Jacksonville Aviation Authority \u2013 Action News Jax"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2014 Action News Jax Ben Becker has learned that the Jacksonville City Council is pressuring the Jacksonville Aviation Authority (JAA) to make major changes &#8211; including potentially rewriting the agency\u2019s charter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">JAA is scheduled to appear before the City Council Finance Committee this Friday, and some council members are considering a bold move: creating a pathway to obtaining potentially millions of dollars in revenue from the authority.<\/p>\n<p><b>Push for Payments<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">City Council Vice President Nick Howland has been one of the most vocal proponents of the idea, arguing JAA should support city projects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">However, JAA leaders said in a 2024 email that Action News Jax obtained, that they are prohibited from making any payments under federal aviation law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cAirport funds must be used for airport purposes,\u201d said Rebecca Henry of the Orlando Airports District Office in reference to a revenue diversion question from JAA Chief Operating Officer Tony Cugno after Howland\u2019s inquiries. \u201cI find your e-mail quite alarming.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">In another 2024 email, JAA asked General Counsel Michael Fackler if it would be allowed to pay for projects on Howland\u2019s wish list &#8211; including a share of raising the power lines over the St. Johns River \u2013 that would have cost millions of dollars. No dollars involved.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">But it raises the question of whether it leaves open the possibility in the future. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\"><b>[DOWNLOAD: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/mobile-apps\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><b>Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks<\/b><\/a><b>]<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Jacksonville Executive at Craig Airport Expansion Back in the Spotlight<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Separately, City Council President Kevin Carrico confirmed to Action News Jax that he\u2019s spoken with JAA CEO Mark VanLoh about the idea of extending the runways at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flyjacksonville.com\/jaxex\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.flyjacksonville.com\/jaxex\/\">JAXEX.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cIn an effort to better understand the history and the possibility of extending the runway at Craig Airfield, I asked the CEO what his understanding was on possibly looking at that. Aside from the public outcry against it, there are environmental concerns as well. I\u2019d say the idea is still stalled of any momentum at this point,\u201d Carrico said in a statement. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">This isn\u2019t a new idea. Action News Jax first reported in 2019 that there was an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/news\/local\/jacksonville-councilman-pushing-to-make-runways-longer-at-craig-airport\/929957436\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/news\/local\/jacksonville-councilman-pushing-to-make-runways-longer-at-craig-airport\/929957436\/\">effort to expand the airport<\/a> to attract more private jets and spur economic development.
