Hochul fended off President Trump\u2019s threats of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecity.nyc\/2025\/08\/12\/democrats-trump-dc-police-national-guard-cities-new-york-oakland-baltimore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Guard takeover<\/a> in New York City, with the governor saying Tuesday she would do \u201ceverything in my power\u201d to stop the feds from crossing that line.<\/p>\n<p>Hochul, who has used the National Guard to help patrol the MTA\u2019s subway system in the city, said that using the force to \u201cmilitarize our streets\u201d was a step too far and an insult to the NYPD.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a feeling that right around that time, my National Guard might be really busy on other issues,\u201d she said at an unrelated press conference in Queens when asked if she would direct the officers to ignore a possible Trump deployment.<\/p>\n<p>The president announced on Monday he put the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/live\/2025\/aug\/12\/donald-trump-washington-dc-national-guard-unsettling-mayor-us-politics-latest-updates-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington, D.C. police department under federal control<\/a>\u00a0to \u201ctake our capital back,\u201d and then said he\u2019d also \u201clook at other cities,\u201d naming New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Baltimore and Oakland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t need anyone to come in and take over our law enforcement apparatus,\u201d Adams said at a press conference in the Bronx on Tuesday morning. \u201cWe have the finest police department on the globe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"A member of the New York National Guard stands post as MTA police conduct bag checks at Grand Central Terminal Wednesday, March 6, 2024 in Manhattan, New York. Using federal troops in local law enforcement other cities, including New York, raises legal questions, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/legality-trumps-deployment-national-guard-l-argued-federal-court-rcna224432\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legality of their deployment<\/a> is currently on trial in California.<\/p>\n<p>While Adams said the recent Midtown shooting \u201csends a signal\u201d that crime is a problem in the city, that perception doesn\u2019t match up with the data. \u201cThose headlines give the wrong impression,\u201d the mayor said. \u201cNew York is moving in the right direction in public safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>City officials have touted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2025\/07\/01\/nypd-hails-major-drops-murders-shootings-first-half-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">low crime numbers<\/a> this summer, including drops in murders and gun violence, as well as the overall crime rate.<\/p>\n<p>Adams did note that\u00a0the federal government could help fight crime in the city with tighter gun laws or federal grants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the federal government wants to assist us in really navigating some of the laws around easily accessibility to automatic weapons\u2026 there is some assistance we can get from the federal government,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"President Donald Trump speaks with reporters in the James Brady Press Briefing Room at the White House, Monday, Aug. 11, 2025, in Washington. (AP Photo\/Alex Brandon)<\/p>\n<p>The mayor said that his public safety deputy, Kaz Daughtry, has been in \u201ccontinuous communications\u201d about public safety, including with the feds. Daughtry, along with NYPD Chief John Chell, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2025\/06\/09\/top-nypd-chief-john-chell-nyc-deputy-mayor-kaz-daughtry-meet-with-trump-on-golf-course\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">met with Trump<\/a> at a New Jersey <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/10\/us-news\/trump-promised-not-to-send-in-military-to-tamp-down-on-nyc-protests-if-nypd-keeps-demonstrators-in-line\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">golf course<\/a> in June.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, who this week has a slate of anti-Trump campaign events across the city, said that he would resist Trump\u2019s attempts to interfere with the city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDonald Trump is not above the law and if he comes for New York City, he will have to go through me,\u201d Mamdani said in a statement on Tuesday. \u201cAs Mayor, I will not downplay or enable his authoritarianism \u2014 and I certainly will not tell New Yorkers not to \u201coverreact\u201d as Andrew Cuomo did when Trump\u2019s militia tried to bulldoze Los Angeles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani speaks during a press conference at the 1199SEIU headquarters on August 11, 2025 in New York City. Santiago\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani said at a press conference in Brooklyn earlier Tuesday that he\u2019s willing to work with the president in good faith even as he remains strenuously opposed to his immigration and economic agendas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Donald Trump wants to pick up the phone and say that he wants to deliver on the cheaper groceries that he ran on, I\u2019m willing to work with him on that,\u201d Mamdani said. \u201cIt just can never be a partnership at the expense of the people of this city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former governor Andrew Cuomo, who\u2019s running for mayor on an independent line, said Monday on social media that Trump would \u201cflatten [Mamdani] like a pancake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat you\u2019re seeing in D.C. today is exactly what will happen if @ZohranKMamdani becomes Mayor,\u201d he said on X.<\/p>\n<p><strong>With Chris Sommerfeldt and Cayla Bamberger\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Originally Published: August 12, 2025 at 12:15 PM EDT<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Mayor Adams and Gov.
