{"id":142208,"date":"2025-08-13T11:05:16","date_gmt":"2025-08-13T11:05:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/142208\/"},"modified":"2025-08-13T11:05:16","modified_gmt":"2025-08-13T11:05:16","slug":"for-9-5m-rothkos-former-home-and-studio-could-be-yours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/142208\/","title":{"rendered":"For $9.5M, Rothko&#8217;s Former Home and Studio Could Be Yours"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mark Rothko\u2019s former apartment and studio in Manhattan\u2019s Lenox Hill, where he created the paintings for his renowned Rothko Chapel in Texas, is back on the market.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sotheby\u2019s Realty is asking $9.5 million for the red-brick converted carriage house at 157 East 69th Street, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sothebysrealty.com\/eng\/sales\/detail\/180-l-1178-38fwqq\/155-east-69th-street-lenox-hill-new-york-ny-10021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">listing.<\/a> Built in 1884 by German-American architect William Schickel, the three-story landmarked Romanesque Revival building originally served as a private equestrian training space before it became Rothko\u2019s home studio during the peak of his creative output in the 1960s.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/exterior-MR-1200x900.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1033761\"  \/>Mark Rothko\u2019s former residence in Lenox Hill (photo Maya Pontone\/Hyperallergic)<\/p>\n<p>The artist created numerous works in the space, marked by its natural light and dramatic atrium, including the series of dark, meditative canvases that currently reside in the non-denominational Rothko Chapel founded in Houston by John and Dominique de Menil. Last year, three of the paintings in the chapel were <a href=\"https:\/\/hyperallergic.com\/943490\/rothko-chapel-paintings-damaged-by-hurricane-beryl-houston\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">damaged<\/a> by roof leaks that occurred during Hurricane Beryl.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe [Lenox Hill] studio had a skylight, and Rothko used a pulley system to work on the large-scale canvases in that space,\u201d Will Davison, a spokesperson for the Rothko Chapel, told Hyperallergic. The building\u2019s atrium elements would later inspire the artist to incorporate a skylight into the structure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe studio was chosen to model the chapel, which in turn was modeled on the studio,\u201d the artist\u2019s son Christopher Rothko told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.papercitymag.com\/arts\/growing-up-rothko-a-famous-artists-son-speaks-up-sheds-light-on-the-man\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PaperCity Magazine<\/a> in 2015.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"905\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/chapel-2-1200x905.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1033053\"  \/>Rothko Chapel interior and benches (\u00a9 Paul Hester; courtesy Rothko Chapel)<\/p>\n<p>Rothko also created his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillips.com\/detail\/mark-rothko\/NY010713\/18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Untitled (Black on Grey)<\/a> (1969\u201370) series in the space, his last body of work before his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1970\/02\/26\/archives\/mark-rothko-artist-a-suicide-here-at-66-mark-rothko-abstract.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">death<\/a> by suicide in 1970 at the age of 66. Visual expressions of the artist\u2019s mental and physical state at the time, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guggenheim.org\/artwork\/3535\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">paintings<\/a> are distinguished by their desolate composition and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moma.org\/collection\/works\/79611\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">somber palettes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The 69th Street property, which has been on the market <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/06\/05\/real-estate\/artist-mark-rothko-made-his-best-works-in-this-9-5m-nyc-pad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">twice since 2023<\/a>, is currently divided into two units, one of which is occupied by the Urasenke Chanoyu Center, a traditional Japanese tea nonprofit that operates on the ground floor.
