Despite Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s insistence that he doesn\u2019t \u201cchicken out\u201d <\/a>when it comes to enforcing his tariffs, the president has, once again, backed down. On Monday, Trump announced that<\/a> he was extending the trade truce between the United States and China, just hours before a new tariff hike was set to go into effect.<\/p>\n

Shortly after Trump\u2019s eleventh-hour announcement, \u201cThe Weeknight\u201d<\/a> co-host Symone Sanders Townsend blasted the president for his reversal: \u201cDonald Trump folded.\u201d She said the extension is more proof that the administration is failing to reach a \u201cconsensus on trade deals\u201d across the board.<\/p>\n

While the president has touted various frameworks of deals<\/a>, Sanders Townsend said those agreements are not final or concrete: \u201cLet\u2019s just be very clear: The fact that he\u2019s doing trade deals is a lie. These are not trade deals.\u201d<\/p>\n

Co-host Alicia Menendez added that such lies have consequences<\/a>, saying that one of the \u201cmost important\u201d elements at play is the \u201cuncertainty that he is absolutely dedicated to infusing into the economy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe on-again, off-again, the fact that the deadlines are [coming],\u201d <\/strong>she continued. \u201cThe deadlines are self-imposed. He is arbitrarily deciding on these deadlines, announcing these deadlines; there are no proof points that it has actually helped him to move these negotiations along.\u201d<\/p>\n

Menendez went on to quote an op-ed from The Wall Street Journal, <\/a>which compared Trump\u2019s efforts to exert political control over the U.S. economy to those of the Chinese Communist Party.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis isn\u2019t socialism, in which the state owns the means of production,\u201d Menendez read, quoting the Journal. \u201cIt is more like state capitalism, a hybrid between socialism and capitalism in which the state guides the decisions of nominally private enterprises.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the point right here,\u201d Sanders Townsend interjected, adding: \u201cIf we really pull the layers back, we need to ask: Is it the government that has a stake, or is it a private entity somewhere that somehow Donald Trump or his treasury secretary has his tentacles in?<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not American capitalism, if you will, and good old American ingenuity being spread across the globe. So I just think people should continue to ask more questions.\u201d<\/p>\n
