MAGA nation is losing it over President Donald Trump\u2019s plot to reclassify marijuana<\/a> under federal law, warning that such a move would lead to the deterioration of American society. <\/p>\n

Trump has confirmed he\u2019s weighing whether to knock marijuana<\/a> down from a Schedule I drug\u2014currently lumped in with heroin, LSD, and ecstasy\u2014to a Schedule III substance, alongside ketamine, anabolic steroids, and certain prescription meds. The change wouldn\u2019t make marijuana<\/a> legal nationwide, but it would slash federal restrictions and open the door to expanded medical research.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re looking at reclassification and we\u2019ll make a determination over the next, I would say over the next few weeks, and that determination hopefully will be the right one. It\u2019s very complicated subject,\u201d Trump told reporters, triggering a cloud of MAGA despair. <\/p>\n

Some high-profile MAGA commentators are leading the freak out. \u201cNo country of potheads has ever thrived, or ever achieved anything at all,\u201d The Daily Wire\u2019s Matt Walsh fumed on X, claiming cities that legalize marijuana deteriorate overnight. <\/p>\n

Podcaster Jack Posobiec doubled down on the panic: He said on his podcast he opposed the idea because he did not \u201cwant to have to be smelling weed anytime I take my kids anywhere in a city or a national park.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking with Axio<\/a>s, Michael Knowles, a conservative political commentator, argued that marijuana is the \u201cliberal intoxicant of choice,\u201d and that the right prefers \u201ctraditional pleasures\u201d like tobacco and alcohol.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe left is more comfortable just kind of vegging out, but they should not be, because sloth is bad for the individual and for society,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Not all MAGA-aligned figures are opposed. Commentator Rogan O\u2019Handley wrote on X that rescheduling marijuana \u201cdoesn\u2019t legalize it, but it does allow for more medical research.\u201d It would undercut \u201cBig Pharma,\u201d \u201cBig Prison,\u201d and \u201cBig Alcohol,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

CJ Pearson, another MAGA influencer, said Trump\u2019s openness to rescheduling marijuana \u201cis research driven\u201d and reflects concern for \u201ccountless veterans whose lives have been changed\u201d by medicinal cannabis.<\/p>\n

Currently, 24 states have legalized recreational weed, and 40 allow it for medical use. A Trump reclassification would supercharge an already multibillion-dollar industry, making pot easier to buy, sell, and study.<\/p>\n

The Daily Beast has contacted the White House for comment.<\/p>\n

In a statement to The Daily Beast earlier this week, a White House spokesperson acknowledged that a reclassification process was initiated under President Joe Biden<\/a>, but that a final decision has not been made.<\/p>\n
