{"id":142750,"date":"2025-08-13T15:52:12","date_gmt":"2025-08-13T15:52:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/142750\/"},"modified":"2025-08-13T15:52:12","modified_gmt":"2025-08-13T15:52:12","slug":"wildfire-burning-near-halifax-business-park-remains-out-of-control","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/142750\/","title":{"rendered":"Wildfire burning near Halifax business park remains out of control"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A wildfire burning near a Halifax business park remains out of control Wednesday, but officials say mist and fog are making for a short window of favourable firefighting conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The fire broke out around\u00a02:30 p.m. AT Tuesday near Susies Lake in a wooded area that borders one of the entrances to\u00a0Bayers Lake Business Park,\u00a0about 10 kilometres west of downtown Halifax.<\/p>\n<p>An update posted to a provincial Natural Resources social media page Wednesday morning said 30 firefighters were back at the scene at first light.<\/p>\n<p>It said there is a short window of favourable foggy, misty conditions for ground crews. However, no aircraft is in the air due to the fog.<\/p>\n<p>The fire was initially estimated to be\u00a025 and 30 hectares. Late Wednesday morning, The Department of Natural Resources said it was now 15 hectares. It cautioned the size could change as given it is still out of control.<\/p>\n<p>An alert issued by the Halifax Regional Municipality at about 10:45 a.m.\u00a0said there is a mandatory evacuation of a number of businesses along the west side of Chain Lake Drive, the main thoroughfare in\u00a0the business park.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH |\u00a0Smoke from the\u00a0fire could be seen across Halifax on Tuesday:<\/strong><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1755100331_236_default.jpg\"  alt=\"\" class=\"thumbnail\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"video-item-title\">Smoke billows from wildfire near Halifax&#8217;s Bayers Lake area<\/p>\n<p>Heavy smoke could be seen Tuesday afternoon. People are being asked to avoid the Bayers Lake Business Park.<\/p>\n<p>The alert said Chain Lake Drive is now open in both directions between the off-ramp for Highway 102 and Julius Boulevard, but access points to the parking lots along the west side of the street from Julius Boulevard to Kent Building Supplies are closed.<\/p>\n<p>Julius Boulevard remains closed, as well as Susie Lake Crescent between Julius Boulevard and Hobsons Lake Drive.<\/p>\n<p>The alert said the\u00a0evacuation is required to manage traffic issues and &#8220;protect residents and workers in the area.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Roy Hollett, deputy chief with Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency, said earlier Wednesday there are no homes that have been evacuated.<\/p>\n<p>However, Nova Scotia Health&#8217;s Bayers Lake Community Outpatient Centre, which was evacuated on Tuesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/nova-scotia\/outpatient-centre-in-bayers-lake-business-park-closed-wednesday-due-to-fire-1.7607575\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">will remain closed Wednesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We do encourage people, if you do not need to be in that area, don&#8217;t go there,&#8221; Hollett told Information Morning Nova Scotia.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A yellow plane flying very close to a lake as three people watch from a dock.\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/canada-wildfires.JPG\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49746192893401\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>A water bomber uses water from Governor Lake to help extinguish a wildfire that near Bayers Lake in Halifax on Aug. 12, 2025.  (Ingrid Bulmer\/Reuters)<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, yellow planes could be seen circling around large plumes of smoke.<\/p>\n<p>One Natural Resources helicopter\u00a0was dropping water, as were several planes sent from New Brunswick, where there are two major wildfires burning. The planes were later sent back, but could return if needed.<\/p>\n<p>Officials issued an emergency alert Tuesday evening <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/nova-scotia\/residents-warned-against-drone-use-during-bayers-lake-fire-1.7607385\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">warning people not to use drones<\/a> within\u00a09.3 kilometres of the uncontrolled wildfire.\u00a0The Halifax Professional Fire Fighters confirmed in a Facebook post that a drone did temporarily pause operations.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Smoke behind a building\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1755100332_41_bayers-lake-fire.jpg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.3333333333333333\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>Smoke coming out from behind the Harding Medical building in Bayers Lake on Tuesday afternoon. (Jeremy Fukala)<\/p>\n<p>Hollett said if helicopters or planes see a drone in the air, &#8220;they will not risk hitting them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It could cause a very serious air collision,&#8221; he said. &#8220;If you get caught having a drone in the wildfire area, you will be charged.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hollett added\u00a0it&#8217;s too early to determine the cause of the wildfire. Once it is under control, Natural Resources will work with Halifax Fire to investigate.<\/p>\n<p>Nova Scotia has been experiencing extremely dry conditions. Last week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/nova-scotia\/hiking-ban-vehicles-wildfire-concerns-1.7019695\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the provincial government imposed a ban on people entering the woods<\/a> in an effort to help prevent wildfires.
