{"id":142915,"date":"2025-08-13T17:17:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-13T17:17:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/142915\/"},"modified":"2025-08-13T17:17:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-13T17:17:09","slug":"carolina-hurricanes-owner-agrees-to-buy-trail-blazers-for-more-than-4b-reports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/142915\/","title":{"rendered":"Carolina Hurricanes owner agrees to buy Trail Blazers for more than $4B: Reports"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon has a tentative deal to buy the Trail Blazers, with plans to keep the team in Portland.<\/p>\n<p>PORTLAND, Ore. \u2014 Tom Dundon, owner of the NHL&#8217;s Carolina Hurricanes, has a tentative deal to purchase the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kgw.com\/article\/sports\/nba\/blazers\/portland-trail-blazers-sale-paul-allen-estate-nba\/283-9799afd5-56c7-4701-b48b-90d31a99faec\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Portland Trail Blazers<\/a> from the estate of Paul Allen, according to multiple reports.<\/p>\n<p>Sportico&#8217;s Scott Soshnick and Eben Novy-Williams <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/business\/team-sales\/2025\/dundon-portland-trail-blazers-sale-paul-allen-1234866910\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">first reported<\/a> the agreement, later<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ShamsCharania\/status\/1955665022904078535\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">\u00a0confirmed by ESPN&#8217;s Shams Charania<\/a>, who reported the sale price is for more than $4 billion.<\/p>\n<p>The buying group also includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/profile\/marc-zahr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Marc Zahr<\/a>, co-president of Blue Owl Capital, and Portland-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/sheeltyle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Sheel Tyle<\/a>, co-CEO of Collective Global, according to Sportico.<\/p>\n<p>Sportico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/business\/team-sales\/2025\/dundon-portland-trail-blazers-sale-paul-allen-1234866910\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">reported\u00a0<\/a>the prospective owners plan to keep the Trail Blazers in Portland. Bill Oram of The Oregonian, citing a source familiar with the proceedings, confirmed that claim, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/sports\/2025\/08\/portland-trail-blazers-to-be-sold-carolina-hurricanes-owner-tom-dundon.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">reporting<\/a> that the group &#8220;is passionate about basketball and intends to keep the team in Portland, where it belongs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are excited,&#8221; the 53-year-old Dundon told Sportico in an email.<\/p>\n<p>The closing date has not been disclosed. Any franchise sale must be approved by the NBA Board of Governors.<\/p>\n<p>Dundon, who lives in Dallas, Texas, bought the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Hurricanes<\/a> in 2018 for $425 million. He also holds majority stakes in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ppatour.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Professional Pickleball Association (PPA)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/majorleaguepickleball.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Major League Pickleball<\/a>. Dundon was an early investor and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2024\/04\/15\/tom-dundon-hurricanes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">owns 10% of Topgolf<\/a>. He also co-founded Drive Financial Services (later Santander Consumer USA) and now leads <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dundoncapitalpartners.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Dundon Capital Partners<\/a>, investing in healthcare, finance, and real estate.<\/p>\n<p>Dundon will serve as the Blazers&#8217; governor, according to Sportico.<\/p>\n<p>The Blazers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kgw.com\/article\/sports\/nba\/blazers\/portland-trail-blazers-sale-paul-allen-estate-nba\/283-9799afd5-56c7-4701-b48b-90d31a99faec\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">announced on May 13<\/a> that a formal process was underway to sell the NBA franchise. Investment bank <a href=\"https:\/\/alleninvestments.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Allen &amp; Company<\/a> and law firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hoganlovells.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Hogan Lovells<\/a> are leading the sales process.<\/p>\n<p>The Blazers are currently managed by the estate of Allen, the former owner of the Blazers. Before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kgw.com\/article\/news\/local\/trail-blazers-owner-paul-allen-dies-of-cancer\/283-604577534\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" id=\"isPasted\">his death in 2018<\/a>, Allen directed that all his sports holdings be sold eventually and that all estate proceeds be directed to philanthropy. Allen&#8217;s sister, Jody Allen, has served as Trail Blazers governor since his death. She also oversees the Allen Trust.<\/p>\n<p>Allen bought the team for $70 million in 1988. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/novy_williams\/status\/1922339134418440286\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" id=\"isPasted\">latest estimate from Sportico<\/a>, the Blazers&#8217; franchise is valued at $3.6 billion.<\/p>\n<p>The Allen estate also manages the Seattle Seahawks NFL franchise and has a 25% interest in the Seattle Sounders FC of Major League Soccer.
