PHOENIX (AZFamily)<\/b> \u2014 Phoenix\u2019s new Chief of Police, Matt Giordano<\/a>, is holding his first news conference since officially beginning his role on Monday.<\/p>\n

Giordano was selected<\/a> to lead the Phoenix Police Department over two other finalists<\/a> in June. He is expected to address the community and discuss his initial priorities for the department, as well as answer reporters\u2019 questions.<\/p>\n

Chief Giordano is no stranger to the Phoenix Police Department. He\u2019s a 23-year veteran of the department who retired as a commander in 2017. He also served as Executive Chief of the Maricopa County Sheriff\u2019s Office and, most recently, as the Executive Director of the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST).<\/p>\n

The search for a permanent chief began after Jeri Williams resigned<\/a> in September 2022 amid a U.S. Department of Justice investigation.<\/p>\n

Michael Sullivan was appointed as interim chief soon after and was among the first list of three finalists<\/a> announced earlier this year. But Sullivan withdrew his name from consideration in the final stages of the hiring process and resigned from the role<\/a> in April. City officials started the search anew<\/a>, while Sullivan was named chief<\/a> of the U.S. Capitol Police.<\/p>\n
