{"id":143449,"date":"2025-08-13T22:04:30","date_gmt":"2025-08-13T22:04:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/143449\/"},"modified":"2025-08-13T22:04:30","modified_gmt":"2025-08-13T22:04:30","slug":"houston-city-council-approves-amended-disaster-recovery-plan-allocates-100-million-for-housing-repair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/143449\/","title":{"rendered":"Houston City Council approves amended disaster recovery plan, allocates $100 million for housing repair"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>HOUSTON<\/strong> \u2013 The Houston City Council has approved its Action Plan for Disaster Recovery following the 2024 Derecho and Hurricane Beryl, with nearly a third of the money going to housing repair.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The plan was drafted in the wake of the two disasters and after the city received nearly $315 million in federal funding meant to support long-term recovery and resilience efforts.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 kDvXdO font_openSans articleList\">\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\"\/><\/ul>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Originally, there was no money allocated for housing repair. However, an amendment made in June to the plan allocated $50 million towards housing repairs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">On Wednesday, the Houston City Council voted to approve the plan, with yet another amendment which raised the housing repair allocations from $50 million to $100 million. The amendment was approved in a 12-3 vote.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 kDvXdO font_openSans articleList\">\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\"\/><\/ul>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The new amendment increasing the allocation comes after Council Member Tiffany D. Thomas argued $50 million was not enough.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Thomas posted a statement on Facebook:<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cCity Council voted 12-3 to increase the housing allocation in the CDBG-DR24 Action Plan from $50 million to $100 million while investing in generators, debris removal and public safety. Mayor Whitmire and I had to unlock our horns to get here. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">And that\u2019s okay. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">That\u2019s what public service is supposed to be\u2014deliberate, at times difficult, and always rooted in delivering solutions for the people we serve. As C.O. Bradford once reminded me, public service should be hard. Because when done right, it forces us to confront complexity and still choose what\u2019s right. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Today is an example of that. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The acceptance of my amendment and the increased investment will help us strengthen our city\u2019s resiliency network, improve local recovery, emergency response, and\u2014just as important\u2014preserve our housing inventory so Houstonians can recover with dignity. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">I want to thank Mayor Whitmire for getting in the ring with me and working this out in the public square\u2014giving Houstonians a front row seat to what it takes to get things done in our city. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">And to the people of Houston, take a bow. We did it.
