Local\u00a0airports have reported ground stops\u00a0due to thunderstorms in the New York City area that\u00a0are moving through Long Island, forecasters said.<\/p>\n
An approaching cold front is mixing with the hot, humid air around the region Wednesday, producing showers and storms\u00a0 that will likely last\u00a0overnight into Thursday, the National Weather Service said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
A strong thunderstorm was continuing its path across Suffolk about 8:30 p.m. Earlier reports had\u00a0winds gusting at\u00a040 mph and pea-sized hail.<\/p>\n
Airports throughout the Northeast, including JFK, are reporting\u00a0ground stops through at least 9\u00a0p.m. due to thunderstorms in the New York City area Wednesday afternoon, according to the Federal Aviation Administration website. Departures from LaGuardia Airport are delayed an average of more than three hours due to thunderstorms, according to the FAA.\u00a0<\/p>\n
There is a “marginal” risk of storms later on Long Island, the weather service tweeted, and storms “may produce locally strong to damaging wind gusts, in addition to heavy rainfall and frequent lightning.”<\/p>\n
Around 6:40 p.m., thunderstorms were “working through Westchester County … making their way into northeast New Jersey and New York City,” said meteorologist\u00a0James Tomasini with the weather service’s Upton office.<\/p>\n
“Those storms will be continuing to move east,” Tomasini added. Showers and isolated thunderstorms could reach “parts of northern Nassau and northern Suffolk … potentially within the next hour or so.”<\/p>\n
The storms Wednesday\u00a0have been dropping “pretty high rainfall rates,” the meteorologist said, adding rates could “potentially” exceed an inch per hour during the evening.<\/p>\n
High temperatures of 90 degrees may fall as the storms come through within the next few hours.\u00a0Then, more storms are expected overnight and into Thursday morning, the weather service said.<\/p>\n
Thursday afternoon’s forecast calls for another chance of showers and thunderstorms, Tomasini said.<\/p>\n
Thursday’s high will be in the mid 80s, and Friday should be slightly cooler, with abundant sunshine.
