Talk about a latte of nutrients.<\/p>\n

Coffee is probably the last thing you\u2019d give your growing kids \u2014 but what if it was a clever way to sneak them some extra vitamins, and they could enjoy it next to you and your cup of joe?<\/p>\n

That\u2019s exactly what David Sanborn and his 8-year-old son, Ethan, set out to create with Kiid Coffee<\/a>, a sugar-free, decaf blend packed with nutrients that sold out just hours after their appearance on ABC\u2019s \u201cShark Tank\u201d earlier this year.<\/p>\n

Kiid Coffee quickly gained traction after David and Ethan Sanborn appeared on \u201cShark Tank.\u201d Disney<\/p>\n

Kiid Coffee is a powdered drink mix made to be stirred into milk or water. Every serving has 4 grams of prebiotic fiber and a mineral blend that includes calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc and vitamins E, C, D3, A, B12 and B6.<\/p>\n

It uses organic, water-decaffeinated coffee \u2014 meaning it still packs in some major antioxidants but is 99.9% caffeine-free.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe amount of caffeine in regular coffee is too much for kids below, say, 14 years old \u2014 and that\u2019s if you even know how much caffeine is in a cup of coffee,\u201d David told The Post, noting that too much can affect heart rate and blood pressure, while also causing sleep issues.<\/p>\n

By comparison, Kiid Coffee \u2014 in the original and caramel flavors \u2014 has a little less than 1 mg of caffeine.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s about 1 mg of caffeine in a single milk chocolate Hershey\u2019s Kiss,\u201d he added. The chocolate flavor of Kiid Coffee has 4.2 mg of caffeine per serving, mostly from cocoa.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s still less than a single serving of hot chocolate,\u201d David said, adding the drink \u201cbasically tastes like a chocolate milk, but without the sugar\u201d because it\u2019s sweetened with organic monk fruit extract.<\/p>\n

Little sips, big ideas: How an 8-year-old lit the spark for Kiid Coffee<\/p>\n

David drinks coffee daily, so when Ethan asked to try it a few years ago, he cautiously poured a splash into some milk.<\/p>\n

\u201cI gave it to him first thinking he wouldn\u2019t like it, and then, funny enough, he did,\u201d David recalled.<\/p>\n

Around the same time, Ethan was recovering from his second broken leg in two years. When a doctor pointed out that most kids don\u2019t get enough vitamin D<\/a> \u2014 essential for calcium absorption and strong bones \u2014 David did some research.<\/p>\n

He discovered 30% of kids ages 2 to 8 \u2014 and 60% of those 9 to 18 \u2014 aren\u2019t getting the minimum recommended amount of calcium daily<\/a>. Magnesium and fiber, also key to nutrient absorption, were \u201cbig concerns\u201d as well.<\/p>\n

Ethan\u2019s gummy multivitamins had zero calcium or magnesium and not enough vitamin D. Milk could help, but he wasn\u2019t a fan, so David started serving him decaf coffee with a dash of magnesium and calcium stirred in.<\/p>\n

Around that time, David had been tossing around business ideas with Ethan, who came in with a stroke of genius and asked his dad, \u201cWhat if we make coffee for kids?\u201d<\/p>\n

Brewing up business<\/p>\n

When the father-son duo set out to create Kiid Coffee, they had three non-negotiables.<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst, taste is king,\u201d David said. \u201cIf kids don\u2019t like the taste of something, they won\u2019t keep having it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Two and three were nutrition and experience. The kids\u2019 nutrition market was flooded with gummy vitamins, which felt to David like teaching kids candy is healthy.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt seemed obvious we were reinforcing a bad habit every morning,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

A brew-tiful blend \u2014 and a morning ritual with family<\/p>\n

After testing more than 100 recipes, David and Ethan landed on the perfect fit and three tasty flavors. <\/p>\n

\u201cI really love the taste, and I feel good when I drink it,\u201d Ethan said. Caramel is his top pick, but he goes for original \u201cwhen I want more coffee taste.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ethan and his younger brother, Logan, start each morning by whipping up their own glass of Kiid Coffee and sipping it over breakfast with their parents.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt forces us to take that time,\u201d David said. \u201cI think it\u2019s important to slow down.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shark tested, classroom approved<\/p>\n

David and Ethan took Kiid Coffee<\/a> to \u201cShark Tank\u201d in March and walked away with a five-figure deal from Daniel Lubetzky. Since then, the Atlanta-based brand has hit more than 150 retail stores and brewed up thousands of fans across the country.<\/p>\n

Ethan\u2019s classmates are among the converts.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter \u2018Shark Tank,\u2019 lots of kids in my school have tried it,\u201d he said. \u201cThey say they like it, and their parents buy it, so I guess they really do.\u201d<\/p>\n

They\u2019re also cooking up seasonal flavors \u2014 Ethan says there\u2019s a mint-mocha and s\u2019mores that is \u201csooo good.\u201d They hope to have them in stores by October and are also exploring new drink ideas like teas and fruit-flavored beverages.<\/p>\n
