Historically, he has promised action or answers within two weeks, as is the case with a decision about U.S. involvement in the Israel-Iran conflict.<br \/>\n                <b class=\"credit\" aria-label=\"Image credit\"><\/p>\n<p>                    Chip Somodevilla\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>                <\/b><br \/>\n                <b class=\"hide-caption\"><b>hide caption<\/b><\/b>\n            <\/p>\n<p>            <b class=\"toggle-caption\"><b>toggle caption<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>        Chip Somodevilla\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/06\/19\/nx-s1-5439075\/israel-iran-conflict-hospital\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Trump said Thursday<\/a> that he will decide whether the U.S. will take military action in the growing Israel-Iran conflict &#8220;within two weeks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a timeline he&#8217;s used many times before, dating back to his first term.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, Trump has promised action on policy issues from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2017\/04\/24\/525359256\/trumps-first-100-days-tax-and-economic-policies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">tax legislation<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/rachel-maddow-show\/right-cue-trump-fails-follow-through-minimum-wage-n1234155\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">minimum wage increases<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/kffhealthnews.org\/news\/back-to-the-future-trumps-history-of-promising-a-health-plan-that-never-comes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">health care<\/a> within two weeks. In his 2024 presidential campaign, Trump repeatedly promised he could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/06\/02\/nx-s1-5414522\/ukraine-peace-talks-russia-trump-putin-istanbul\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">end the war in one day<\/a> \u2014 but it has since stretched into its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/06\/01\/1253506257\/three-years-into-his-war-on-ukraine-what-does-putin-really-want\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">third year<\/a>. Over the last two months, Trump has said repeatedly that various  answers to questions about the war, including U.S. assistance to Ukraine,  would be just two weeks away. <\/p>\n<p>On <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/28\/politics\/two-weeks-trump-ukraine-war\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">April 24<\/a>, he told a reporter who asked about continued military assistance for Ukraine: &#8220;You can ask that question in two weeks, and we&#8217;ll see.&#8221; He gave a similar answer days later when asked if he trusted Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom he had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/05\/26\/nx-s1-5412389\/trump-putin-absolutely-crazy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">publicly criticized<\/a> in recent months.<\/p>\n<p>Those weeks came and went. And if he is, we&#8217;ll respond a bit differently, but it will take about a week and a half, two weeks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, after Trump postponed his decision on Iran strikes, a reporter <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/did:plc:4llrhdclvdlmmynkwsmg5tdc\/post\/3lry33cl6562h?ref_src=embed&amp;ref_url=https%253A%252F%252Fiframe.nbcnews.com%252F0oPSsnfY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">in the briefing room<\/a> pointed out the pattern of delayed two-week deadlines and asked White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt &#8220;how we can be sure that he&#8217;s going to stick to this one.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Leavitt acknowledged the deadlines but said the fighting in Ukraine and the Middle East &#8220;are two very different, complicated global conflicts&#8221; though he didn&#8217;t comment publicly on the topic again until <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/trump-says-eu-not-offering-fair-trade-deal-japan-being-tough-too-2025-06-17\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">earlier this week<\/a>, when he said tariffs on pharmaceutical imports would be coming &#8220;very soon.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/business\/2025\/06\/12\/president-trump-says-hell-set-unilateral-tariff-rates-within-weeks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said on June 12<\/a> that he would notify trading partners about unilateral tariff rates within \u2014 you guessed it. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re going to be sending letters out in about a week and a half, two weeks, to countries, telling them what the deal is,&#8221; Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>   It&#8217;s been a pattern since at least 2017\u00a0   <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zROqlHfVHTk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jen Psaki<\/a>, a former  White House press secretary for President Joe Biden, called the two-week deadline &#8220;one of Donald Trump&#8217;s absolute favorite tactics&#8221; in her MSNBC show on Thursday. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And most of the time, in fact almost every time, when two weeks rolls around, Trump has either completely forgotten about whatever it was he promised in the first place, or \u2026 he&#8217;s hoping people have just moved on,&#8221; Psaki said.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how some of Trump&#8217;s other two-week deadlines have played out over the years:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tax plan\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Feb. 9, 2017, Trump said a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2017\/04\/24\/525359256\/trumps-first-100-days-tax-and-economic-policies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">&#8220;phenomenal&#8221; (Photo by Andrew Harnik\/Getty Images)\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a>         <\/p>\n<p>His administration unveiled its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2017\/04\/26\/525742495\/trump-administration-proposes-significant-tax-overhaul-and-tax-cut-plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">massive tax overhaul<\/a> over two months later on April 26, and Trump signed it into law after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2017\/12\/20\/572157392\/gop-poised-for-tax-victory-after-a-brief-delay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Congress passed it<\/a> in late December.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has since promised to extend those tax cuts \u2014 the majority of which are due to expire at the end of 2025 \u2014 through a bill that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/05\/21\/nx-s1-5406392\/trump-republicans-tax-bill-reconciliation-medicaid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">passed the House<\/a> in late May and is under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/06\/17\/g-s1-73126\/senate-republican-tax-spending\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">close scrutiny in the Senate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Paris Agreement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During his first presidential campaign, Trump said he would remove the U.S. from the climate accord. And after he took office, he said at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/04\/29\/politics\/trump-paris-climate-agreement-decision\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">an April 2017<\/a> rally that he would decide its fate during the following two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>On June 1 of that year, he announced that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thetwo-way\/2017\/06\/01\/530748899\/watch-live-trump-announces-decision-on-paris-climate-agreement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">U.S. would withdraw<\/a> \u2014 which, under the terms of the agreement, didn&#8217;t take effect until <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/11\/03\/930312701\/u-s-officially-leaving-paris-climate-agreement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">early November 2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One of Biden&#8217;s first acts after taking office in 2021 was to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/inauguration-day-live-updates\/2021\/01\/20\/958923821\/biden-moves-to-have-u-s-rejoin-climate-accord\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">re-enroll the U.S.<\/a> in the agreement, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/01\/21\/nx-s1-5266207\/trump-paris-agreement-biden-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">move Trump reversed<\/a> by executive order at the start of his second term.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Health care<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first Trump administration unsuccessfully tried to end the Affordable Care Act, even asking the Supreme Court to overturn it in late 2020. The Senators met with U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss Trump's &quot;One, Big, Beautiful Bill.\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a>         <\/p>\n<p>Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/trump-pushes-back-against-critics-on-coronavirus-addresses-whether-he-will-accept-election-results-in-exclusive-interview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told Fox News<\/a> in July 2020 that he would be replacing Obamacare and &#8220;signing a health care plan within two weeks,&#8221; which did not happen. <\/p>\n<p>According to the health policy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/quick-take\/the-concept-of-a-plan-president-trump-proposed-to-replace-the-aca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">nonprofit KFF<\/a>, while Trump did propose the idea of an Affordable Care Act replacement in his 2020 budget, it didn&#8217;t get much attention. And when Trump was asked about his Obamacare replacement plan at a September debate during the 2024 presidential campaign, he infamously replied that he had &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/clip\/campaign-2024\/donald-trump-on-healthcare-plan-has-concepts-of-a-plan\/5131801\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">concepts of a plan<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Infrastructure<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As president-elect in 2016, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thetwo-way\/2016\/11\/17\/502480053\/federal-reserve-chair-throws-cold-water-on-trump-economic-plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Trump promised<\/a> a $1 trillion infrastructure spending program \u2014 which took years to become a reality.<\/p>\n<p>He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/05\/01\/politics\/donald-trump-infrastructure-plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told CBS News<\/a> on May 1, 2017 that his administration&#8217;s infrastructure plan would be coming in &#8220;the next two or three weeks, maybe sooner.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But he didn&#8217;t unveil the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/02\/11\/584940681\/trump-to-unveil-long-awaited-1-5-trillion-infrastructure-plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> $1.5 trillion plan<\/a> until February 2018, after a series of false starts that turned &#8220;Infrastructure Week&#8221; into a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/05\/15\/611389675\/why-its-infrastructure-week-again\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">long-running beltway joke<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While Trump and Democrats tentatively <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2019\/04\/30\/718677236\/trump-and-democrats-agree-on-2-trillion-for-infrastructure-but-not-on-how-to-pay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reached an agreement<\/a> in the spring of 2019, the bill ultimately failed due to disagreements over how to fund it and a number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/04\/01\/us\/politics\/coronavirus-infrastructure-week-timeline.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">competing crises<\/a>, from Trump&#8217;s impeachment to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conspiracy theories<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>More than once, Trump has said that evidence to back up his various claims would appear in exactly a fortnight.<\/p>\n<p>In March 2017, after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thetwo-way\/2017\/03\/04\/518478158\/president-trump-accuses-obama-of-wire-tapping-provides-no-evidence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">baselessly alleging<\/a> that former President Barack Obama had wiretapped his Trump Tower phone ahead of the 2016 election, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/the-fix\/wp\/2017\/03\/16\/donald-trump-explained-twitter-the-universe-and-everything-to-tucker-carlson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told Fox News<\/a>: &#8220;I think you&#8217;re going to find some very interesting items coming to the forefront over the next two weeks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Within days, congressional leaders from both parties <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2017\/03\/15\/520252977\/house-intelligence-chair-no-evidence-of-alleged-trump-tower-wiretap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said there was no evidence<\/a> to support Trump&#8217;s claim. Years later, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2xglDpABkCA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2019 Fox interview<\/a>, Trump admitted he had made the accusations based only on &#8220;a little bit of a hunch.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Separately, days after losing the 2020 election to Biden, Trump alleged election fraud, and immediately challenged the results in several key states. He told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/daily-memo\/2599402\/byron-york-exclusive-trump-talks-post-election-fight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Washington Examiner<\/a> that he expected to succeed in &#8220;probably two weeks, three weeks.&#8221; Numerous lawsuits, investigations and audits \u2014 including ones led by Republicans \u2014 found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/11\/09\/nx-s1-5184405\/election-2024-fraud-claims\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">no evidence of the widespread fraud<\/a> that Trump alleged.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"President Trump talks to reporters on board Air Force One on Monday.
