{"id":144620,"date":"2025-08-14T08:36:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-14T08:36:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/144620\/"},"modified":"2025-08-14T08:36:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-14T08:36:10","slug":"driver-in-fatal-crash-had-no-restrictions-after-earlier-collision-involving-doug-ford-opp-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/144620\/","title":{"rendered":"Driver in fatal crash had no restrictions after earlier collision involving Doug Ford, OPP says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">An 18-year-old who faces charges in a crash that killed a father of three had no restrictions on his drivers\u2019 licence after a collision involving Premier Doug Ford earlier this year, the Ontario Provincial Police confirmed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Now, a member of the victim\u2019s family wants to see legislative change to prevent people accused of dangerous driving from being on the road. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Jaiwin Kirubananthan, of Oshawa, was arrested in connection with a head-on collision on Aug. 3 that killed 35-year-old Andrew Cristillo of Mount Albert, Ont., and injured his wife and three daughters. He was charged with dangerous driving causing death, three counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm, failing to remain at an accident resulting in death and public mischief. The crash happened in Whitchurch-Stouffville, northeast of Toronto.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/article-man-charged-in-fatal-collision-the-same-driver-involved-in-crash-with\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Man charged in crash involving Ontario Premier Doug Ford now facing charges in fatal collision<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The OPP have confirmed Mr. Kirubananthan was also charged with dangerous driving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/article-ontario-premier-doug-ford-unharmed-after-collision-on-highway-401\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/article-ontario-premier-doug-ford-unharmed-after-collision-on-highway-401\/\">after a collision<\/a> with a vehicle carrying Mr. Ford on Jan. 8 on Highway 401. At the time, Mr. Ford was on his way back from an announcement at Darlington Nuclear Generating Station; he wasn\u2019t hurt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">None of the charges against Mr. Kirubananthan have been tested in court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">OPP spokesman Sergeant Kerry Schmidt said Mr. Kirubananthan was awaiting trial for the earlier charges at the time of the crash earlier this month and did not have any restrictions on his licence. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThere\u2019s no automatic suspensions unless you\u2019re charged with stunt driving,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The OPP have said the driver of the vehicle that hit Mr. Cristillo and his family failed to remain at the scene of the collision, but that he was located shortly thereafter. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Sergeant Schmidt said the OPP worked with York Regional Police and their canine unit to find the driver. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Court documents show Mr. Kirubananthan had failed to attend appearances in court in February, March and April. Mr. Kirubananthan\u2019s lawyer, Barry Fox, did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Jordan Cristillo, Andrew\u2019s younger brother, said he was shocked to learn about the accused\u2019s driving history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cI still can\u2019t understand how this individual was allowed to be on the road,\u201d he said. \u201cThe recklessness needs to be met with consequences.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Jordan said he\u2019d like to see tougher penalties for dangerous driving charges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cIt\u2019s like the worst nightmare imaginable,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">A GoFundMe campaign launched to support Mr. Cristillo\u2019s family reached more than $400,000 on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cIn an unimaginable time, it means the world to us to have our community rally behind us,\u201d Jordan said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The page says that Mr. Cristillo\u2019s daughters face life-altering injuries as a result of the crash. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">It also says that Christina Cristillo, Mr. Cristillo\u2019s wife, has been fighting breast cancer for the past few years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Without Mr. Cristillo\u2019s income and with<b> <\/b>Ms.<b> <\/b>Cristillo\u2019s diagnosis, the family will need support from community members, Jordan said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Jordan said his brother was a \u201cone-of-a-kind human that we\u2019re going to<b> <\/b>miss forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Ms. Cristillo described her husband as the life of the party, and someone with a wicked sense of humour. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cHe was an amazing, hands-on dad to our girls, always playing with them, teaching them, and making them laugh until their cheeks hurt,\u201d Ms. Cristillo wrote on the fundraising page. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cOur hearts will always carry a void that can never be filled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">With reports from Stephanie Chambers and The Canadian Press<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"An 18-year-old who faces charges in a crash that killed a father of three had no restrictions on&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":144621,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[2147,50,4741],"class_list":{"0":"post-144620","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-news","8":"tag-canada","9":"tag-news","10":"tag-pleasemod"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@us\/115026210826091582","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/144620","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=144620"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/144620\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/144621"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=144620"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=144620"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=144620"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
