{"id":144719,"date":"2025-08-14T09:30:14","date_gmt":"2025-08-14T09:30:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/144719\/"},"modified":"2025-08-14T09:30:14","modified_gmt":"2025-08-14T09:30:14","slug":"morning-report-cities-furthest-from-housing-goals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/144719\/","title":{"rendered":"Morning Report: Cities Furthest from Housing Goals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The cities furthest away from hitting their housing goals aren\u2019t, as you might guess, those that fight the hardest against new housing.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the cities furthest away from hitting their housing goals tend to have blue-collar roots, our Will Huntsberry found in a new analysis of housing data.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Imperial Beach \u2014 where newly-elected Supervisor Paloma Aguirre was mayor until very recently \u2014 is the furthest off the mark.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Only five cities countywide are on track to hit their marks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Three of the five cities most off track are relatively small, densely-populated and have median incomes below other places in the county. But two stuck out for other reasons.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Escondido\u2019s Mayor Dane White said that a voter approved initiative called Proposition S is holding his city back from building more housing. Proposition S makes it so that any amendment to the city\u2019s land-use plan must be approved by citywide ballot. Until recently, San Diego Gas &amp; Electric had placed the value of preventing a single death at $100 million. They want their own, for their residents only.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Oceanside recently switched the operator of its homeless shelter for that very reason, Layne reports.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The San Diego Rescue Mission had been pushing Oceanside to make its facility more of a regional facility, but Oceanside didn\u2019t like the idea of that arrangement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/voiceofsandiego.org\/2025\/08\/13\/north-county-report-oceansides-shelter-shake-up\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Read the North County Report here.\u00a0<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>In Other News\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Chula Vista Mayor John McCann announced the city is following San Diego\u2019s lead, working with Caltrans to speed up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kpbs.org\/news\/quality-of-life\/2025\/08\/12\/chula-vista-in-talks-with-caltrans-to-clear-encampments-from-on-ramps\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">clearing homeless encampments <\/a>on the agency\u2019s land. (KPBS)<\/li>\n<li>A teacher at St. Augustine High School, a private school near North Park, has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.10news.com\/news\/local-news\/san-diego-area-teacher-facing-federal-child-porn-charge\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">arrested on federal charges<\/a> of distributing child porn. (Union-Tribune)<\/li>\n<li>Officials at the San Diego Zoo<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/2025\/08\/12\/safari-parks-elephant-valley-habitat-to-open-in-early-2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Safari Park announced that a new Elephant habitat<\/a> \u2013 the largest project the zoo has undertaken \u2013 that has been under construction since 2022 will open early 2026.
