(Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1939: <\/strong>The first Major League Baseball <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-white-sox-win-first-nigh\/178766337\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">night game in Chicago<\/a> took place on the South Side.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was as though one had suddenly walked into bright sunshine,\u201d the Tribune reported after Charles Comiskey II flipped two switches at 8:25 p.m. to ignite Comiskey Park\u2019s new $140,000 \u201cilluminating plant.\u201d White Sox pitcher Johnny Rigney then threw a three-hitter and struck out 10 St. Louis Browns in a 5-2 win watched by more than 30,000 fans.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"m4RsbJ9naK\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2023\/08\/03\/vintage-chicago-tribune-how-wrigley-field-got-lights-and-why-cubs-fans-had-to-wait-past-8-8-88-to-raise-w-flag\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vintage Chicago Tribune: How Wrigley Field got lights and why Cubs fans had to wait past 8-8-88 to raise \u2018W\u2019 flag<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Cubs executives \u2014 including future Sox owner Bill Veeck \u2014 were also in attendance. Charles Drake, assistant to then-Cubs owner Philip K. Truman gathered reporters in the Oval Office of the White House to announce that Japan\u2019s Emperor Hirohito <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/1997\/07\/22\/august-14-1945\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agreed to surrender<\/a>. Victory over Japan (or V-J) Day marked the end of World War II.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"xStDg3tyAT\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2023\/11\/09\/vintage-chicago-tribune-how-the-city-celebrated-wars-end-and-welcomed-its-veterans-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vintage Chicago Tribune: How the city celebrated war\u2019s end and welcomed its veterans home<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Within minutes of the announcement, tens of thousands of people gathered in the Loop to celebrate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-great-war-ends-chicago\/178753073\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">They were noisy.<\/a> They represented all ages and all classes. Elderly men and women were as numerous as bobby soxers,\u201d the Tribune reported. \u201cThe celebrants shouted, they sang and danced, but they were orderly. Taverns and cocktail lounges had closed their doors immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Willye White of Chicago was a surprise winner with a 21 feet, 3\/4 inch leap in the broad jump in women's competition at the U.S.-Poland track and field meet at Warsaw, Poland on July 27, 1963. (AP)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1981:<\/strong> Chicagoan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2007\/02\/11\/celebrating-the-life-of-a-pioneer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Willye White<\/a>, the first woman to qualify for five Olympic Games, was <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-willye-white-in-track-ha\/178766677\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inducted<\/a> into the Track and Field Hall of Fame. White qualified for the Olympics in 1956, 1960, 1964, 1968 and 1972. She won a <a href=\"https:\/\/usopm.org\/willye-white\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">silver medal<\/a> in the long jump as a 16-year-old at Melbourne in 1956. Police did not know the motive for the killing.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t until a decade later that investigators discovered that the DNA collected from her fingernails belonged to Michael Gargiulo, a neighbor who had moved to Los Angeles and was charged with Pacaccio\u2019s death in 2011. A jury\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/enews.chicagotribune.com\/q\/1SMvsxig9gC0YUga0Mtk_Mj2c2anQCVZ1fcCZcOJa2pydW1vcmVAZ21haWwuY29tw4gWeXEa66cdpOLep3J-3i9_WVrgxQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/enews.chicagotribune.com\/q\/1SMvsxig9gC0YUga0Mtk_Mj2c2anQCVZ1fcCZcOJa2pydW1vcmVAZ21haWwuY29tw4gWeXEa66cdpOLep3J-3i9_WVrgxQ&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1755114618063000&amp;usg=AOvVaw14F7haBQsw0hD1VJhd7_Bx\">found him guilty<\/a>\u00a0in three brutal knife attacks there in 2019.
