\u201cStar Line\u201d has been called Chance the Rapper\u2019s \u201cmost ambitious and personal project to date.\u201d It\u2019s also his first new album in six years.<\/p>\n

The artist will kick off his And We Back Tour<\/a> on Sep. 26. Tickets go on general sale Friday at 10 a.m. Central Time.<\/p>\n

The album\u2019s title is a nod to Marcus Garvey\u2019s Black Star Line, a Black-owned steam ship line initiated in 1919 \u2014 after which Chance and Vic Mensa\u2019s free 2023 music festival<\/a> in Ghana was also named.<\/p>\n

In a 2023 interview with Vocalo<\/a>, Chance described taking pride in the project as a work-in-progress. \u201cAll these amazing, important Black artists, producers, painters, all of these people that are in the Pantheon of Black iconography have been coming and helping me build this project,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cStar Line\u201d has been in the works for several years, with several singles released since 2022, though the album\u2019s track listing is not yet public. He performed the newest single \u201cTree\u201d at Lollapalooza.<\/p>\n

The rapper hosted a Chicago \u201cStar Line\u201d listening party on July 31, later making a brief appearance at Lollapalooza<\/a> to promote the completed project with a crowded set on the Perry\u2019s Stage. According to press materials, the album is inspired by both the rapper\u2019s roots in Chicago and travels to Ghana, Jamaica and international art fairs. It will incorporate hip-hop and soul with lyrics focusing on identity, legacy and resilience.<\/p>\n

Chance first teased a new project, often also referred to as \u201cStar Line Gallery,\u201d in 2022 with the release of several singles and accompanying artworks \u2014 like \u201cChild of God,\u201d<\/a> with a large-scale painting by Na\u00efla Opiangah<\/a> displayed at the Museum of Contemporary Art. The project\u2019s cover art is a painting by Chicago painter Brandon Breaux, who also made the cover art for \u201cColoring Book,\u201d \u201cAcid Rap\u201d and \u201c10 Day.\u201d<\/p>\n
