Black bear numbers have grown steadily after being classified as a \u201cthreatened\u201d animal from 1974 to 2012 in the state. In the days following the attack, three black bears were killed in the area. Florida has not held an official bear hunt, though, since 2015, where more than 300 bears were killed in 48 hours\u2014including mothers and cubs\u2014leading to the hunt being halted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">Environmentalists have opposed the hunt, arguing that one bear attack does not justify a cull\u2014nor does the population growth\u2014and that the rule will reinstate \u201ctrophy\u201d killings of the animals. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tallahassee.com\/story\/news\/local\/state\/2025\/08\/13\/florida-black-bear-hunt-approved-faces-protest-lawsuit-dates-quotas\/85631816007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">One advocate during the meeting<\/a> called the hunt &#8220;unnecessary and cruel.\u201d Other advocates argued that the hunt could open the door to further destruction of animal habitats in Florida. Wildlife group Bear Warriors United <a href=\"https:\/\/news.wfsu.org\/state-news\/2025-08-12\/on-the-eve-of-the-proposed-bear-hunt-vote-bear-warriors-united-files-a-lawsuit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">filed an 11th-hour<\/a> lawsuit on Tuesday evening against the FWC, hoping to stop the hunt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">More than<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tallahassee.com\/picture-gallery\/news\/2025\/08\/13\/fwc-public-comment-florida-bear-hunt\/85640134007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> 150 people <\/a>attended Wednesday\u2019s vote, with hunting advocates wearing orange and those in opposition to the hunt wearing black. Some wore outfits with slogans including \u201cStop the Bear Hunt\u201d and \u201cProtect Animals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mb-0 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">The FWC will decide who is able to hunt by holding a lottery for the 187 available permits, and hunters will be permitted to use both archery and guns, including rifles, pistols, shotguns, and muzzleloaders.
