The USC screenwriting \u00a0major describes it as a collection of \u201cre-imagined love songs,\u201d Including her acoustic guitar-fueled take on La Jolla resident Alicia Keys\u2019 2007 chart-topper, \u201cNo One.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the record, this will be at last the third album of cover versions by the raspy voiced Gray \u2014 real name: Natalie Renee McIntyre \u2014 following 2007\u2019s \u201cCovered\u201d and 2012\u2019s \u201cTalking Book\u201d (which featured her remaking Stevie Wonder\u2019s classic 1972 album of the same name).<\/p>\n<p>But Gray\u2019s current \u201cOn How Life Is\u201d 25th anniversary tour devotes at least half its set list to her debut album, which she performs in its entirety. She\u2019s also including some songs from her subsequent albums and some choice covers, including back-to-back readings of Bobby Hebb\u2019s 1966 hit, \u201cSunny,\u201d and Radiohead\u2019s 1992 breakthrough hit, \u201cCreep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gray is being accompanied on this tour by her new, jazz-inspired band. By coincidence, her 2016 tour \u2014 which included a sold-out shoe here at the Belly Up \u2014 also featured a jazz-inspired band that she formed after joining former San Diego singer Gregory Porter as a guest vocalist on sax great David Murray\u2019s terrific 2013 album, \u201cBe My Monster Love.\u201d Teaming with Murray was an epiphany for Gray.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"CZeVP6FiOH\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/2013\/11\/05\/a-newold-sound-for-macy-gray\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A new\/old sound for Macy Gray<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cPlaying with somebody like David, who\u2019s such an expert musician on every level, has made me really step up my game,\u201d she told me in a 2016 Union-Tribune interview. \u201cI find I\u2019m bringing some of the things I\u2019ve learned from David and his band into to my regular shows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>8 p.m. today, Aug. 15. He divides his non-touring time between his homes in Nashville and Compton.  (Jeremy Cowart)<br \/>\nKeb\u2019 Mo\u2019, with Shawn Colvin<\/p>\n<p>Compton native Keb\u2019 Mo\u2019 has received five Grammy Awards since 1996, including a 2018 Best Contemporary Blues Album win for \u201cTajMo,\u201d his splendid collaboration with American roots-music giant Taj Mahal.<\/p>\n<p>The two have now re-teamed for a similarly engaging follow-up album, \u201cRoom On The Porch,\u201d which takes an easy-going dip into blues, country, folk, New Orleans-styled funk, and more.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"VJvaYYYdPs\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/2014\/05\/14\/keb-mo-anchored-in-the-blues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Keb\u2019 Mo\u2019 anchored in the blues<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Even without Mahal next to him on stage, it\u2019s likely Keb\u2019 Mo\u2019 (short for Kevin Moore) will perform a number of songs from \u201cPorch\u201d here.<\/p>\n<p>Veteran troubadour Shawn Colvin, herself a three-time Grammy-winner, is well worth arriving early to hear. Their current joint tour was rescheduled from last fall, after Keb\u2019 Mo\u2019 underwent open heart surgery to correct a leaking valve. He was back in action last December when he sang with Susan Tedeschi in honor of Bonnie Raitt at the 2024 Kennedy Center Honors.<\/p>\n<p>7:30 p.m. today, Aug. 15. (Karolis Kaminskas)<br \/>\nCecile McLorin Salvant<\/p>\n<p>A multiple Grammy Award-winner and 2020 MacArthur Foundation \u201cgenius grant\u201d recipient, Florida native Cecile McLorin Salvant studied classical and Baroque singing at college in France before she discovered jazz and soared to new heights.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"LeJDlEs4Pv\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/2025\/08\/10\/three-time-jazz-grammy-award-winner-cecile-mclorin-salvant-goes-from-baroque-to-garage-band\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Three-time jazz Grammy Award-winner C\u00e9cile McLorin Salvant goes from baroque to Garage Band<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>One of the most talented, versatile and daring vocal artists of her generation, she is \u2014 at 35 \u2014 a masterful musician whose captivating new album, \u201cOh Snap,\u201d will be released Sept. 19 by Nonesuch Records.<\/p>\n<p>Salvant\u2019s recent opus, the 80-minute \u201cOgresse,\u201d is a voice-and-orchestra work that she describes as a \u201cmurder ballad-musical fable, opera, storytelling-around-the-campfire moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For her La Jolla Music Society SummerFest concert, Salvant will perform \u201cBook of Ayres,\u201d a reimagining of early music, folk, jazz, vaudeville, sung Greek lyric poetry and more. She be accompanied by a five-piece group, led by ace pianist Sullivan Fortner, that includes Du\u0161an Balarin on theorbo, a bass flute that has 14 strings and can measure more than six feet from end to end.<\/p>\n<p>Salvant\u2019s concert here takes place the night before fellow vocal wizard Cynthia Erivo\u2019s sold-out Sunday show at The Shell. Their back-to-back performances promise to be highlights of the year for fans of first-rate singing.<\/p>\n<p>7:30 p.m. Aug. 16.
