In Los Angeles, where traffic is practically a way of life and gridlock<\/a> often makes headlines.<\/strong> But the city\u2019s streets aren\u2019t just congested, they\u2019re also hotspots for frequent speeding, especially along major corridors and in residential neighborhoods. <\/p>\n With this context, L.A. is preparing a groundbreaking initiative, where speeding fines will be adjusted based on the driver\u2019s income level.<\/a> The goal? To ensure that penalties are proportionate, preventing low-income drivers from being disproportionately burdened<\/strong> while still holding wealthier drivers accountable.<\/p>\n This model is already in place in cities like San Francisco since March 2025 under the state-approved \u201cSpeed Safety System Pilot Program\u201d. It relies on automated cameras<\/strong> installed in high-risk areas that capture vehicles exceeding the speed limit, and the fines are then calculated based on both the severity of the offense and the driver\u2019s reported income. <\/strong><\/p>\n San Francisco fines currently range from $50 for speeds 11\u201315 mph over the limit to $500 for speeds above 100 mph, <\/strong>as reported the San Francisco Chronicle<\/a> expains However, drivers earning up to 200% of the federal poverty level qualify for a 50% discount,<\/strong> and those who are unhoused receive an 80% reduction. <\/p>\n L.A. plans to implement its own version of the program by 2026,<\/strong> as the San Diego Post<\/a> reports, with some added flexibility.<\/strong> City officials are considering allowing qualifying drivers to complete community service instead of paying the full fine.<\/p>\n
